In the 19th and early 20th centuries, small towns didn’t rely on highways and ride-shares the way we do today. They depended on trains for arrival and departure, for shipments of goods, for news carried by passengers and parcels, and for the simple rhythm of commerce.

When a rail line came through (or didn’t), the future of a town often seemed to hinge on it. That’s exactly why taking the Virginia Scenic Railway route from Louisa to Gordonsville stands out. It isn’t just a scenic afternoon it’s a living snapshot of how rail determined where people gathered and where opportunity moved.

History, Art, and Small Town Finds

The Louisa County History Museum and Visitor Center is a natural starting point to this adventure. It sets the tone for the trip by grounding the visit in local stories, community roots, and the kind of archival detail that makes a town feel real. Browsing the local newspaper archive there is a special treat because it adds context to what comes next in the shops and streets.

Nearby, the Louisa Art Center offers a different kind of connection to town life, especially for travelers interested in what Louisa creates. Visiting makes Louisa feel like a place where history and creativity sit side by side, with space for workshops and art-class experiences depending on what’s being offered during a visit.

After that, coffee and a bite at Bethel Brew and Bites is a great way to settle in before exploring downtown. Located alongside the energy of the railway area, it’s an easy, satisfying stop for coffee, breakfast, sandwiches/salads and the kind of casual comfort that pairs perfectly with a day of exploring.

Downtown Louisa is where the local charm really shows up. In downtown you’ll find stores like the Purple Pumpkin full of personality and Village Furniture with home and decor pieces that fit right into the “find something delightful for your space” mood of Louisa’s shopping scene.

For visitors who like a creative stop, the Avenue ArtHouse adds an artsy edge to the downtown walk. And if the day calls for a slower, treasure-hunting moment, Just About Antiques is a great fit for browsing unique pieces at a relaxed pace. Before diving into downtown, Gordonsville’s Visitor Center can help visitors get oriented quickly, which makes it easier to plan the next stops with confidence and time.

Right near the heart of rail history, the Exchange Hotel is a great stop to add before you head further into town. It’s one of those places where you can feel how rail travel shaped daily life built right in the orbit of the lines and old traveler routes. The hotel now a museum makes a meaningful first look at Gordonsville’s story.

What makes the Exchange Hotel especially worth a visit is that it is a place where rail travel, everyday hospitality, and Civil War medicine all overlap. Built to serve travelers arriving by train, it later became the Gordonsville Receiving Hospital, and then during Reconstruction served as a Freedman’s Bureau hospital for newly freed people. Today, the museum is fully restored and lets you walk through that layered history with collections of medical and historical artifacts that bring the story to life. If you want your Gordonsville visit to feel more meaningful, this is the kind of stop that connects the town’s heritage to what you’ll see next.

Fried chicken is a long-running part of Gordonsville’s reputation, tied to African-American women who served fried chicken to train passengers years ago an origin story that still gives the meal meaning today.

Another delicious lunch stop is the Barbecue Exchange and their hearty comfort classics are perfect for fueling up while you’re out browsing and keeping the day moving at a comfortable pace. If you’d like to slow down a bit after exploring, consider Well Hung Vineyards which is a favorite for trying different wines, enjoy a relaxed tasting, and even have something fun like a wine slushy. It’s also a great place to settle in for lunch or to come back later for dinner. If you’d prefer coffee and a browse-friendly pause, be sure to stop by Jackson & Company Market for espresso, gelato, and baked goods.

The downtown shopping walk becomes the second highlight of the day. Revivals on Main stands out for its art deco style jewelry and vintage finds, including free trade items. Weaver Street Shops offers a lovely mix of vintage quilts and fabrics, plus more free trade treasure-hunting along the way. Raindrops in Virginia is a destination for unique heritage-style items, including fossil for sale such as megalodon teeth. Westwind Flowers a different kind of local appeal offers flowers along with locally relevant touches like honey and home decor. More treasures can be found at Annie Gould Gallery, Posh, Tess & Co. Jewelers, Cavallo Gallery & Custom Framing and Gillian Valentine plus many others. The shops here are warm and inviting with gift-worthy decor and the kind of small finds that instantly feel personal.

After an hour and a half of exploring passengers return to the train for the return trip. By the time the last dessert is served and the journey eases back toward Louisa, the whole trip starts to feel like more than a two-town getaway. It connects the dots between Louisa’s history and creativity, the way rail brought movement and opportunity to small communities, and Gordonsville’s distinctive personality especially the fried chicken tradition that feels like it belongs to the railroad story in the best way.

This is what makes the Louisa-to-Gordonsville ride so memorable: it’s not just something scenic to do, it’s a living route through the heart of two towns, where the past shows up in the food, the shops, and the rhythm of the day. From the museum archives and art stops, to downtown browsing and handmade souvenirs, to the views rolling by outside the window, everything adds up to one continuous experience.

Both towns each have their own personality and the best way to experience it is to turn the ride into a true weekend-style trip with time to explore both communities. After a day exploring Shenandoah Crossing Resort is a great place to stay to slow the pace down and turn the rail trip into more of a true weekend. The property feels like a complete getaway, with lots of space to relax between adventures. Between the lodge-style atmosphere and the outdoorsy setting, it’s easy to unwind without feeling like the schedule is always driving the day.

Shenandoah Crossing also offers plenty of on-site amenities, which makes it ideal for different kinds of travelers. There are indoor and outdoor options for relaxing, along with pool time and hot tub-style downtime. For fun, the resort includes activities that help fill the gaps between exploring things like a game/activities area, mini-golf, and an arcade. Outdoors lovers can also enjoy walking trails, and the resort’s lake setting adds to the laid-back vibe. Add in convenient on-site dining and a store-like option for essentials, and it becomes an easy home base while visiting both towns.

Breakfast at Mac’s Kitchen and Catering is an especially nice way to start a second day. It’s close, convenient, and satisfying an effortless fuel-up before heading back out, with plenty of time to explore downtown shops, local food stops, and all the small-town details that make the trip feel connected end to end. A relaxed second or third day should include room to revisit favorites or discover new ones in both Louisa and Gordonsville. Lunch at Country Boys Barbecue, plus a visit to Floozies Pie Shop and Cafe or Grace & Grain in Louisa are a perfect closing stop with fresh sweets or a pie or if you prefer ice cream Frosties’ Rail Stop to round out the trip in a warm, local way.

This journey isn’t just about getting from Louisa to Gordonsville but about how a whistle can stitch together history, commerce, art, and everyday hospitality into one easy, unforgettable rhythm. You taste it in the fried chicken that carries tradition forward, you find it in the downtown shelves and handmade treasures, and you feel it in the landscape rolling past like a moving postcard. In the end, this journey leaves you with more than souvenirs: it leaves you with a sense of place, and a reminder that sometimes the best way to understand a town is to follow the path that built it.

These are some of the most memorable and unique restaurants I tried during my visit:

Big Chill Island House

Located approximately two miles from the property at Barefoot Landing, Big Chill Island House delivers a tropical escape with every meal. The restaurant’s waterfront setting creates the perfect atmosphere for enjoying fresh, vibrant cuisine. I started with the Boba buns. These soft, pillowy steamed buns were filled with rich sauce plus meat and were an unexpected delight that I’ll be thinking about long after my trip. Next I tried the tuna poke bowl which was exceptionally fresh, with tender, high-quality tuna balanced by bright citrus and crisp vegetables. Followed by the lobster roll which was buttery, light and simply delicious. For a dessert I went with the grilled pineapple, which arrived warm and caramelized, bringing out the fruit’s natural sweetness (this item is served as a side). All paired with tropical drinks I felt like I’d been transported to an island paradise.

If you only catch one summer sunset this season, it has to be here! The deck overlooks the Intracoastal Waterway + Barefoot Landing and here golden hour becomes pure magic. Tropical drinks. Perfect views. The kind of moment you’ll replay in your mind months later. Big Chill Island House is where every sunset feels like a celebration and real magic happens here on Monday nights when Barefoot Landing shoots their summer fireworks. This celebration creates the perfect backdrop for patio dining.

Ole Smoky Distillery & Yee-Haw Brewing

Located at Broadway at the Beach on Celebrity Circle, Ole Smoky Distillery & Yee-Haw Brewing combines two of my favorite things: craft spirits and craft beer, all under one roof. The outdoor patio is spacious and welcoming, and the live music creates an energetic, fun atmosphere that makes you want to linger. I started by exploring their moonshine flight, sampling several distinct expressions of this quintessential Southern spirit.

Following that, I enjoyed their selection of brews from Yee-Haw Brewing, each offering unique flavor profiles and character. For dinner, I dined on the patio and ordered the grouper, which was perfectly prepared and delicate, and a blackened ribeye steak that was cooked to perfection with a beautiful crust and tender, juicy interior. Every bite of food paired beautifully with the spirits and beers on offer. If you time your visit for a Tuesday, you’ll be treated to spectacular fireworks at 10 PM, adding another layer of entertainment to an already memorable evening.

I ❤️ National House of Pancakes

NHOP is a breakfast and brunch destination that takes its craft seriously. This spot is perfect for starting your day or enjoying a leisurely midday meal. I ordered the Nutella pancakes with strawberry and banana, which arrived as a decadent stack of fluffy pancakes covered in creamy Nutella and topped with fresh fruit. Followed by trying the red velvet waffle which came with vanilla drizzle, strawberry cream cheese, and fresh strawberries. The slight tanginess of the red velvet paired perfectly with the sweetness of the cream cheese and berries. For something more savory, I tried the crab cake eggs Benedict with grilled tomato, poached eggs, Hollandaise, and Cajun remoulade.

The crab cakes were packed with flavor and held together perfectly, while the Hollandaise was silky and rich. The shrimp and grits featured smoked sausage, bacon, roasted red bell peppers, and artisan bloody mary sauce, a Southern classic elevated with creative touches. Everything is over the top here including blueberries in the water and huge portions like my fruit “cup” which includes every variety of fruits you could want and over the top breakfast potatoes. The drinks are equally creative: I enjoyed a Screwdriver served in a glass purse complete with a floating rubber duck, and a mimosa served in a hollowed-out pineapple. Every detail here shows thoughtfulness and a commitment to making breakfast memorable.

Hard Rock Cafe

A classic stop for rock and roll nostalgia combined with solid food and drinks, the Hard Rock Cafe at Broadway at the Beach on Celebrity Circle was established back in July 1995 and remains an iconic venue worth visiting. The atmosphere is fun and energetic with memorabilia on every wall, and you can catch happy hour for great drink deals. I started my meal with the One Night in Bangkok spicy shrimp, a starter that demands respect. These crispy shrimp are coated in a creamy spicy sauce and served with coleslaw and green onions. The heat level is perfect and spicy enough to wake up your palate but not so intense that it overshadows the quality of the shrimp themselves. This is the the kind of appetizer you could make a whole meal of.

For my main course, I ordered the Messi Chicken Sandwich, a collaboration between Hard Rock Cafe and soccer legend Lionel Messi. Inspired by the Argentinean staple milanesa, this sandwich features a double stack of crispy, Milanese-style chicken breast topped with melted provolone cheese and a rich herb aioli. Fresh tomatoes and peppery arugula round out the sandwich, served on a toasted artisan bun. The combination is surprisingly sophisticated and the herb aioli keeps the chicken moist and flavorful, while the arugula adds an herbaceous bite that elevates it far beyond a typical chicken sandwich. The star of the evening though was my Tropical Margarita, which features Teremana Blanco Tequila, strawberries, Cointreau orange liqueur, guava pineapple juice, and fresh lime juice, served in a beautiful souvenir glass. The drink is art in a glass; bright, refreshing, fruity, and perfectly balanced.

Local Activities & Experiences

In addition to great spots to eat, the area around the rental also offers incredible activities that blend natural beauty with entertainment and unique experiences. For those seeking relaxation or adventure, there’s something for everyone. These are some of the activities and experiences I enjoyed during my stay:

The Beach

Located just approximately one mile from The Hidden Gem, the beach is obviously a gateway to sun, sand, and sea. You can easily spend a full day lounging under an umbrella, taking a refreshing swim, or simply walking along the shoreline at sunset, the proximity to the property makes it effortless to enjoy the coast whenever the mood strikes. The beaches in North Myrtle Beach are clean and safe even for a solo traveler. In addition to the beach there are also several piers you can visit around the area if you’re interested in fishing.

Golfing in North Myrtle Beach

Myrtle Beach is renowned as, “The Golf Capital of the World,” with championship courses dotting the Grand Strand. The best part about staying at The Hidden Gem? There’s a golf course literally at the end of the street. You can step right out and be on the greens in minutes, making it incredibly convenient for golf enthusiasts. And when you’re back at the house, the private putting green in the backyard is perfect for brushing up on your short game. No matter if you’re looking to play a quick round or spend the day perfecting your swing, you won’t find a more accessible location for your golf getaway. This house will be your 19th hole!

Duplin Winery

Situated in nearby Barefoot Landing, Duplin Winery specializes in sweet Muscadine wines that celebrate the flavors of the South. Wine tastings include eight wines, cheese dip, crackers, and 1 full glass of your favorite wine to enjoy. They also offer wine flights. My experience here was nothing short of delightful.

The day I visited live music helped create a warm, inviting atmosphere as I sampled their collection of Muscadine wines, each one telling a story of Southern tradition and craftsmanship. I finished my visit with their banana pudding cheesecake, which was rich, satisfying, and the perfect complement to the wines I’d tasted. It’s the kind of place where you can easily spend an afternoon and leave with new favorite wines and happy memories.

Broadway at the Beach

This shopping and entertainment destination offers endless possibilities for browsing, shopping, and people-watching. The area is vibrant and lively, with something to catch every visitor’s eye. One of the must-do experiences here is the Broadway 360 Observation Wheel. This impressive 156-foot observation wheel features thirty-six gondolas, each accommodating up to six people, and is decorated with over one million multicolor lights synchronized to music.

Each ride lasts approximately eleven minutes and the views from the top are spectacular, offering a bird’s-eye perspective of the entire area and the coastline beyond. Riding the wheel at sunset or after dark when the lights are fully illuminated is an unforgettable experience that captures the magic of the Myrtle Beach area.

Black Flag Forge

For a truly unique and memorable activity, Black Flag Forge which offers hands-on blacksmithing experiences for guests ages six and up. I forged a custom knife during my visit, and it was one of the most rewarding experiences of my entire trip! This is something many people may have on their bucket list.

Working with the metal, learning the techniques, and creating something with my own hands gave me a souvenir that’s far more meaningful than anything I could buy. Beyond knives, you can also forge hair pins, coins, oyster knives and other items. Whatever you choose to create, you’ll leave with a one-of-a-kind piece and memories that will last a lifetime.

The Crazy Mason Milkshake Bar

The Crazy Mason Milkshake Bar is a must visit stop! This destination has made a name for itself with outrageous, creative dessert creations that blur the line between drink and dessert. Their menu offers an impressive array of signature Crazy Mason shakes, Crazy Waffles (three-scoop sundaes served on warm sugar pearl waffles), Crazy Bombs (ice cream sandwiches made with homemade cookies), and other decadent creations that celebrate excess in the best possible way.

This trip I ordered the Crazy Colada, one of their signature creations, and it was an experience unto itself. This isn’t just a milkshake it’s a complete indulgence served in a keepsake mason jar. The drink features coconut ice cream blended with fresh pineapple chunks, rimmed with vanilla buttercream and Nilla Wafers. But what makes the Crazy Colada truly special is what’s on top: a generous slice of coconut cake perched right on the edge of the jar, along with whipped icing, fresh pineapple wedges, crushed graham crackers, and a festive cocktail umbrella.

Every component works together to create a symphony of tropical flavors with the creamy coconut ice cream, the bright pineapple, the tender coconut cake, and the subtle sweetness of the wafer rim. It’s the kind of over-the-top creation that makes you feel like you’re on a perpetual vacation, and it’s exactly what you come to The Crazy Mason to experience. The mason jar is yours to keep too, creating a permanent souvenir from your visit.

Before I share the specific spots we visited, let me paint the picture of Tappahannock itself. Located in Essex County along Virginia’s Northern Neck, Tappahannock is a charming riverside town that feels frozen in the best possible way historic yet vibrant, quiet yet full of character. The town’s waterfront location has shaped its identity for centuries, and you can feel that history walking down its tree-lined streets.

What makes Tappahannock special is how it balances preservation with genuine hospitality. This isn’t a town trying to manufacture charm; it’s a place where locals actually live, work, and welcome visitors like old friends. The downtown area features locally-owned shops, restaurants run by passionate owners, and attractions that celebrate both the region’s colonial heritage and its natural beauty along the Rappahannock River.

Unlike busier Virginia destinations, Tappahannock moves at a slower pace, which is exactly what makes it ideal for a girls weekend. There’s no rushing from one tourist trap to another. Instead, you have the space to truly relax, linger over meals, browse boutiques without pressure, and actually connect with the people and places you visit. The Rappahannock River itself becomes part of your experience from watching sunsets from your rental, paddling on the water, or simply sitting on the beach with a good friend.

Where We Stayed: Piscataway Point

Our home base was Piscataway Point, a vacation rental that’s been in the same family for over 100 years. The owner’s grandfather actually grew up on the property, so we were stepping into genuine family history. What makes this place special is how it balances  original architectural character with modern comfort plus vintage details, and all the conveniences we needed for a relaxing getaway. The property sits on a private point along the creek, offering complete seclusion and tranquility while remaining just minutes from town, dining, and attractions. It’s the kind of location that forces you to slow down and there’s no impulse to rush anywhere because the setting itself is so peaceful.

We spent our mornings reading on the screened porch, attempted fishing off the dock (with no results, but that wasn’t really the point), and lingered to watch sunsets paint the water in shades of gold and pink. There’s something restorative about starting your day looking out at the water and ending it the same way. It’s the kind of setting that naturally slows you down and invites the kind of unhurried conversation that makes these trips memorable. This is the kind of place where you lose track of time and suddenly realize you’ve been talking for three hours.

Hobbs Hole Golf Course

Hobbs Hole Golf Course was the perfect way to start our mornings. This 18-hole championship course sprawls across 160 acres and welcomes everyone from first-time range visitors to experienced golfers. The course offers 5 tee options ranging from easy to challenging, so everyone in our group could play at a comfortable level and enjoy the experience without feeling over-challenged or bored.

What impressed me most was how the course manages to feel like a destination without the intimidating atmosphere of a private club. The full-service amenities include a restaurant and bar, PGA instruction, and meticulously maintained grounds. The practice facilities are excellent, so whether you want to sharpen your skills before your round or just spend time at the range, you have everything you need. And the best part? It’s all available at affordable rates year-round, which is increasingly rare for quality courses.

Hobbs Hole attracts everyone from serious golfers seeking a moderate test to beginners hitting balls at the range for the first time. The course design manages to be challenging without being punishing, and the staff genuinely seems happy to see you no pretension, just good golf and good service.

Prince Street Café

After our morning round, we headed directly to Prince Street Café, located right at the golf course. This charming spot serves breakfast until 3 PM, so there’s no rushing between golf and a proper meal. I ordered their salt herring breakfast which includes crispy salt herring, two eggs, fried potatoes, and cinnamon apples. It was absolutely delicious. The salt herring had a perfect balance of briny and crispy, the eggs were cooked just right, and those cinnamon apples added a slightly sweet note that shouldn’t have worked but absolutely did. My mom enjoyed her classic cheeseburger which was equally flavorful and generous. This is the kind of burger that’s simple but clearly made with quality ingredients and care.

The café is the passion project of owner Maria Esquer, who rebuilt the original Prince Street Café and brought it back to life with meticulous care. You can taste that dedication in every dish. The restaurant captures that nostalgic café feeling the kind of spot where locals have been coming for years and where you feel like you could become a regular in a single visit.

I loved it so much I returned a second time for a chicken salad sandwich and homemade coconut cake. The chicken salad had that perfect balance of mayo and celery, served on fresh bread, and the coconut cake was the kind of homemade dessert that reminds you why bakery items made from scratch are worth the indulgence. This is the kind of place that makes you want to linger over coffee and conversation, which is exactly what a girls weekend should feel like.

Waterfront Relaxation: Duke Street Beach

For an easy afternoon escape, Duke Street Beach offers everything you need for a low-key riverside retreat. This small, intimate beach is perfect for paddling out on the water or simply relaxing on the sand. What impressed me most was how accessible it is—there’s a self-service kiosk right at the beach where renting a kayak is effortless and there’s no charge for parking, so you can spend as little or as much time as you want without worrying about costs adding up.

The beach itself has real charm. It’s not overcrowded or commercialized; it’s the kind of spot where locals actually go to relax. We set up beach chairs and an umbrella, soaked in the river views, and enjoyed the unhurried atmosphere. The Rappahannock River views are genuinely beautiful from this vantage point and wide enough to feel expansive but intimate enough to feel peaceful.

What makes Duke Street Beach perfect for a girls trip is that it requires zero effort or planning. You show up, set up your chairs, and decompress. There’s no agenda, no schedule, no pressure. It’s the exact opposite of typical tourist beaches where you’re fighting crowds and navigating paid parking. This is just a quiet spot where you can be present with the people you’re with.

Foodie Finds

Roberto Italian Restaurant

For foodies, Roberto Italian Restaurant is an absolute must-visit. This family-friendly spot specializes in authentic Italian cuisine, and the pride they take in their craft is evident in every dish. Walking in, you immediately feel the warmth of the space it’s the kind of restaurant where the owners have clearly thought about every detail, from the lighting to the music to the way servers interact with guests.

The menu is extensive without being overwhelming, and the wine list is impressive, including selections from the restaurant’s own wine. Prices are reasonable for the quality you’re getting, which is refreshing in today’s dining landscape. We ordered the soft-shell crab special, which was perfectly prepared and a standout of the evening. The crab had a delicate crispness to it, and the sauce complemented rather than overwhelmed it. The steak roll, with its perfectly melted mozzarella and tender steak wrapped in marinara sauce, was equally impressive and comforting without feeling heavy. Our shared Greek salad was crispy and refreshing with all the classic toppings done right: quality tomatoes, crisp cucumbers, briny olives, and good feta.

For dessert, we made room for pistachio gelato and limoncello cake, both decadent and the perfect way to end the meal. The gelato was creamy and had real pistachio flavor (not the artificial sweetness you sometimes get), and the lemon cello cake struck that perfect balance between tart and sweet. The whole experience felt special without being pretentious. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, the pacing is leisurely, and the staff clearly wants you to enjoy yourself. It’s ideal for a girls trip where you can linger over food and conversation without feeling rushed or judged for taking your time. This is the kind of restaurant you remember months later and recommend to friends.

Java Jack’s Café

Java Jack’s Café is the perfect cozy spot for breakfast or brunch, and we loved everything we ordered. The dining room has serious character it features the original porch and living room from a vintage home, complete with vintage tablecloths and a relaxed vibe that feels like having breakfast at a friend’s house. There’s quirky décor, comfortable seating, and an overall atmosphere that says “we’re not trying too hard here, we’re just creating a nice space for people to gather. We indulged in a coffee flight (a great way to sample different roasts and preparations), and we shared French toast that was rich and satisfying without being overly heavy. The avocado toast was perfectly executed creamy avocado on quality bread with just the right toppings.

But the real standout was the Church Lane Special a hearty plate with two cooked-to-order eggs, applewood-smoked bacon or sausage, fresh fruit, and two of their namesake Jacks, a signature item that’s absolutely delicious. The Jacks are essentially their take on a breakfast pastry or cake, and they’re worth the visit alone. They have that perfect texture between cake and bread, and they’re not sickeningly sweet. The whole plate comes together as a complete breakfast experience.

The friendly staff made us feel genuinely welcome and cared for. There’s a difference between a restaurant that serves you and one that makes you feel looked after, and Java Jack’s is definitely the latter. It’s the kind of place where the owner clearly takes pride in hospitality, not just food.

A Touch of History: 1710 Tavern

For a special brunch or dinner experience, 1710 Tavern is essential. One of Virginia’s oldest taverns with roots tracing back to 1710, this living, breathing piece of American history is beautifully preserved. It’s not a museum or a theme restaurant trying to capitalize on history; it’s an actual functioning tavern that happens to be genuinely historic. Walking in is like stepping back in time. The tavern’s original architecture includes hand-hewn beams, central fireplaces, and a bar crafted from 300-year-old walnut. These aren’t reproductions or recreations they’re original materials that have been standing for centuries. There’s something humbling about eating in a space where revolutionary ideas were debated.

Beyond the history, 1710 Tavern pairs colonial charm with refined, regional-inspired cuisine that celebrates Chesapeake Bay ingredients. We kicked off our morning with delicious pancakes and a pimento cheese omelette that hit the spot. The pimento cheese is a classic Southern preparation, and this version was creamy and flavorful without being heavy. The pancakes were the kind of fluffy, substantial breakfast pancake that makes you feel taken care of. Visitors can dine in the sophisticated outdoor dining room (perfect for warmer weather), enjoy cocktails at the historic bar, or relax under the pecan tree in the casual Tavern yard. The experience is flexible and you can go casual or dress up, depending on your mood and the occasion.

1710 Tavern offers a one-of-a-kind experience where history and hospitality come together beautifully. It’s the perfect spot for a special girls trip or leisurely brunch where you’re not just eating; you’re experiencing Virginia history. The staff clearly takes pride in both the history and the hospitality, which makes the whole experience feel authentic and special.

Shopping: Unique Finds and Local Treasures

One of the best parts of Tappahannock is its collection of locally-owned boutiques. These aren’t chain stores or places designed to look quaint; they’re genuine small businesses run by people who care about their inventory and their customers.

The Tappahannock Farmers Market: A Must-Visit Community Gathering

If you’re planning a girls weekend that coincides with the right dates, the Tappahannock Farmers Market is a vibrant must-visit destination for exploring historic downtown. Held on the third Saturday of each month from April through October, this community gathering is the heartbeat of Tappahannock’s local food and artisan scene.

The market features everything you could want: fresh local produce, homemade baked goods, unique gifts, food trucks, and beautiful plants and flowers. The scenic location in historic downtown offers a great atmosphere with lively entertainment, dining options, and fun activities for all ages. Walking through the market, you experience the genuine community spirit that makes Tappahannock so special like neighbors greeting each other, farmers proudly displaying their harvest, and local artisans selling one-of-a-kind, handcrafted items.

We picked up some one-of-a-kind handcrafted items and fresh vegetables, and more importantly, we got to support the local businesses that make this town tick. There’s something deeply satisfying about buying directly from the person who grew or made what you’re purchasing. You’re not just getting quality goods; you’re participating in the local economy and connecting with the community on a meaningful level.

This is one of the best places to soak in a Saturday morning with friends, grab breakfast or lunch from one of the vendors and enjoy the small-town charm that makes Tappahannock so special. Find dinner ingredients, unique gifts, or just the experience of being part of a thriving farmers market community, this gathering delivers. It’s the kind of authentic, unpretentious experience that defines what makes Tappahannock different from more commercialized destinations.

Hoskins Creek Home is a treasure hunt for anyone who loves curated home décor and gifts. The shop is packed with vintage and fun finds such as beautiful furniture pieces, art, lamps, wreaths, mirrors, and so much more. Walking in feels like exploring someone’s personal collection. We were especially drawn to the nautical items and local postcards that capture Tappahannock’s charming riverside spirit perfectly.

What makes this shop special is the curation. Every item feels like it was chosen for a reason, not just grabbed to fill shelf space. Whether you’re hunting for a statement piece for your home, a unique gift for someone special, or just browsing for inspiration, Hoskins Creek Home delivers the kind of experience that makes a girls trip unforgettable. You’re supporting a small business while scoring unique pieces you won’t find anywhere else which is so much more satisfying than buying something mass-produced.

T Town Tack

T Town Tack is a one-of-a-kind stop for anyone who loves western style, quality workwear, or equestrian gear. This local favorite carries everything from horse tack and saddles to boots, hats, western wear, and jewelry, stocking top brands like Carhartt, Red Wing shoes, Wrangler, and Justin boots. Even if you’re not in the market for western wear, the shop is worth a visit just to experience the authentic western vibe and genuine customer service.

The owners clearly know their products and their customers. There’s no pressure to buy; they’re just happy to chat about boots or help you find the right fit. We picked up adorable finds like a cute cow car coaster and mini animal figures that are now permanent reminders of our trip. These aren’t items we would have found at a chain store, and they spark genuine conversation and memories every time we use them.

Crying Shame Frame Shop and Gifts is a charming, nautically-themed shop that perfectly captures Tappahannock’s waterfront spirit. It combines custom picture framing with curated gifts and home décor like calendars, bottle holders, candles, beautiful serving ware, napkins, house flags, sleepwear, makeup bags, travel cases, greeting cards, and paintings.

The nautical theme isn’t cheesy or overdone; it feels authentic to the location and the river culture. We grabbed adorable river-themed flags and tiles that have us reminiscing about our Rappahannock River views every time we use them. Stop here to frame a cherished memory from your trip or finding the perfect gift for someone special, this shop delivers thoughtful, carefully selected items. There’s real intention behind what they stock, which makes browsing feel like discovering treasures rather than shopping.

Why Tappahannock?

What makes Tappahannock ideal for a girls weekend isn’t just the individual attractions it’s the overall atmosphere. This is a town where you can genuinely relax without feeling like you’re missing out on something bigger. There’s no FOMO about tourist hotspots because Tappahannock is the destination, not a side trip.

The Rappahannock River is the lifeblood of the town, and you feel its presence everywhere in the pace of life, in the cuisine, in the décor, in the outdoor activities. The combination of outdoor recreation (golf, kayaking, river views), excellent dining, charming shopping, and genuine hospitality makes it perfect for the kind of girls trip where you actually spend time together instead of rushing to check boxes.

Outdoor activities abound here, from beach volleyball to casual beachfront dining, making it a great spot for families and friends to gather.

Emerald Isle

Emerald Isle is perfect for those seeking a quieter beach experience. Known for its pristine shores and family-friendly vibe, this area features soft sand and gentle waves ideal for swimming and exploring. The slower pace allows for peaceful walks along the beach, shell collecting, and relaxing under an umbrella with a good book. Emerald Isle also hosts beautiful nature trails, perfect for biking or hiking enthusiasts who want to explore the coastal ecosystem. The local dining scene offers delicious seafood options, ensuring your palate is satisfied after a day in the sun.

Indian Beach

Indian Beach offers a charming, laid-back atmosphere, making it an ideal choice for those looking to escape the crowds. It’s known for its serene beauty and is great for families and couples alike. Tip: Staying in a beach rental allows you to step right onto soft sands and feel the gentle breezes. With fresh seafood markets and charming eateries around every corner, there’s more than enough to satisfy your cravings. Let’s dive into some of my recommended must-visit spots!

The Trading Post, Emerald Isle

The Trading Post is a casual restaurant where southern hospitality meets coastal flavors. This local treasure offers an inviting vibe with both indoor and outdoor seating. Here, you can enjoy dishes like their famous Shrimp-n-Grits, featuring sautéed shrimp over homemade cheddar grits, or a delicious seafood boil complete with snow crab legs, mussels, steamed shrimp, potatoes, corn, and sausage. A highlight of my dining experience here was the crab dip and the key lime pie, which was a sweet, tangy ending that left us coming back for more!

Red Oar, Morehead City

This trip, I tried Red Oar, a spot that was new to me. The views here match the quality of the food. This waterfront eatery specializes in raw and steamed seafood, offering everything from fresh oysters to locally caught fish. I tried the soft shell crab and crab cake burger as well as the shrimp tacos, both of which were perfectly seasoned. The laid-back atmosphere makes this an ideal spot for enjoying sunset views while savoring every seafood delight.

The Dock House, Beaufort

In Beaufort, I recommend visiting The Dock House. I had seen many reviews mentioning their soft-shell crabs, harvested right from local waters. If you haven’t guessed it, I love soft-shell crabs! My crabs were fried to crispy perfection with a light, well-seasoned batter. I also ordered a fish sandwich that was huge and overflowing from the bun. Dining upstairs provided incredible views and added extra charm to a memorable dining experience.

Willie’s Seafood Market

For those nights when you want to cook, Willie’s Seafood Market is your go-to place. With everything from freshly caught fish to shrimp and seafood boils, this market allows you to select just what you need for your grill or kitchen. The staff is knowledgeable and ready to offer cooking tips, ensuring you’ll bring a taste of the coast back to your rental. The selection here is always super fresh and reasonably priced, and cooking at your rental can also save you some money, especially if you’re feeding a larger group. They even have essentials like seasonings and lemons to make them a one-stop seafood shopping experience.

Vernon Lee’s Ole Crab Shack

Vernon Lee’s Ole Crab Shack feels like stepping back into another time. This nostalgic eatery serves up classic seafood dishes like fried fish and their famous hush puppies, bringing you memories of simpler times. Surrounded by waterfront views and friendly staff, it’s a place where laughter and good food meld together perfectly, making it a must-visit spot along the coast.

Every bite along the Crystal Coast tells a story, from fresh catches to homemade desserts. Each restaurant and market has its unique flair and quality that guarantees an experience worth savoring. On the Crystal Coast, you’ll find flavors that are bound to leave you enchanted.

Discovering Beaufort: A Charming Coastal Town

With its historic charm and breathtaking waterfront views, no trip to the Crystal Coast would be complete without a visit to Beaufort. Renowned for its unparalleled views of the coastline, you’ll find a marina here with boats and ferries providing leisurely shelling trips or evening tours that highlight the beauty of the marshlands while spotting dolphins playfully swimming nearby. These boating experiences create lasting memories, combining stunning views with the calming sounds of nature.

Cruising the Coast

During my visit, I took a tour to experience the diverse marine wildlife right off the coast at Sand Dollar Island. This tiny island is only accessible at high tide, and the beach was adorned with unique shells and sun-bleached sand dollars waiting to be discovered. The thrill of collecting these treasures is a fantastic way to bond with family or friends. Wading out into the crystal water, I also found live sand dollars, a hermit crab, and several clams. During my tour, I saw curious bottlenose dolphins playing in the boat’s wake and glimpsed the Shackleford Banks horses on Carrot Island, creating unforgettable moments.

The Old Burying Ground

A visit to Beaufort isn’t complete without strolling through the Old Burying Ground, where you’ll find graves dating back over 300 years. This serene site provides an intriguing glimpse into the town’s maritime legacy, featuring stories from its pirate history and Native American heritage. Every time I visit, I have to walk among the ancient oaks draped in Spanish moss and pay my respects to those that came before me.

A Sweet Stop at The General Store

When in Beaufort, you’ll find lots of unique shops, and no visit is truly complete without a stop at The General Store, famous for its large selection of ice cream. With flavors ranging from classic vanilla to delightful unique blends, this charming spot quickly becomes a family favorite. Sitting outside with a scoop of ice cream while watching the boats sail by is a perfect way to cool off after a day filled with beach activities. The store’s friendly atmosphere makes it an inviting place to unwind and enjoy the local flavor.

Discovering Cape Lookout National Seashore

Another highlight of my Crystal Coast trip was taking a short boat ride from Harkers Island to the stunning Cape Lookout National Seashore, a true treasure of the North Carolina coast. This barrier island paradise features breathtaking scenery, unspoiled beaches, and abundant wildlife. Visitors can enjoy walking the sandy shores, collecting shells, and spotting various bird species.

One of the distinctive characteristics of Cape Lookout is the iconic lighthouse, which stands as a beacon of history. Visitors can climb the 207 steps to the top for breathtaking panoramic views of the beach and surrounding waters. The lighthouse’s distinctive black and white diamond pattern is a sight to behold and makes for great photographs. Currently, the lighthouse is under a $15 million restoration, preventing me from exploring inside.

Cape Lookout National Seashore is also known for its incredible shelling and fishing opportunities. Spending time at the beach and visiting Cape Lookout National Seashore creates the perfect blend of relaxation and adventure, making your trip to the Crystal Coast truly unforgettable.

Guests can take leisurely walks along winding trails or find a quiet spot to sit and enjoy the serene beauty that defines the Virginia countryside. During my visit I attended the 10th Annual Fauquier County Wine Showcase, which was a highlight of my visit. The event brought together an impressive selection of local vineyards, allowing guests to explore various wines that exemplify the diverse terroir of Virginia. Each winery presented its own unique offerings, featuring everything from crisp whites to bold reds, along with options that celebrated innovative blends.

Tasting the wines was an experience in itself. Each winemaker explained the layers of flavors accompanied by tales of their vineyards or about their dedication to sustainable practices and artisanal crafting. Engaging with the winemakers provided deeper insights into their passionate approach to viticulture, making the wine showcase not only a tasting but an education in Virginia’s viticultural landscape. The event invited attendees to immerse themselves in the stories behind each bottle. The wine showcase was a wonderful way to deepen the appreciation for the art of winemaking and the area.

A Culinary Experience

Culinary enthusiasts will find their taste buds tantalized at Airlie’s on-site dining options. The farm-to-table philosophy ensures that guests enjoy fresh, seasonal ingredients sourced from local farms and gardens. The thoughtfully crafted menu not only showcases the best of Virginia’s produce but also reflects the rich culinary traditions of the region. Dining at Airlie is not just a meal; it’s an experience that delights the senses, making every dish a celebration of local flavors.

Complementing the wine showcase, I had the pleasure of attending a wine dinner that highlighted the culinary excellence of the region. As a foodie this was one of the standout features of my visit to Airlie and an exquisite culinary journey where each course was thoughtfully paired with selected wines. The chefs showcased their skills, crafting dishes that enhance the flavors of the wines, resulting in an unforgettable meals of thoughtfully prepared dishes, showcasing the bounty of Virginia’s farms. 

Each course was a symphony of flavors, demonstrating how the culinary arts in Virginia have evolved to reflect local ingredients and traditions. From fresh vegetables sourced directly from nearby farms to artisanal cheeses and meats, every element on the plate harmonized beautifully with the wines being featured. Guests enjoyed Caramelized Pear Salad paired with Barboursville Viognier 2024, followed by Braised Beef Cheeks with wild mushrooms, creamed potatoes, wilted kale and a red wine sauce paired with Barboursville Cabernet Franc 2023. For dessert, the Dark Chocolate Fondant with raspberry coulis was served with a glass of Taylor Fladgate 10-Year-Old Tawny Porto and the perfect finale! The atmosphere was warm and inviting, encouraging guests to savor not only the food and wine but the camaraderie that blossomed among fellow attendees. Conversations flowed easily, fueled by the shared joy of discovering local flavors and the stories behind them.

Exploring Warrenton, Virginia

Even without a specific event on the calendar, Airlie and the surrounding area offers plenty to explore. Just a short drive from Airlie lies the quaint town of Warrenton, Virginia a treasure trove of history and community spirit. Warrenton is known for its well-preserved architecture and inviting downtown area, where unique shops and local eateries beckon. As you stroll through the charming streets, you can soak in the rich history reflected in the town’s buildings and learn about local heritage that adds depth to any visit.

The close proximity of Warrenton enhances the Airlie experience, allowing guests to immerse themselves in both the estate’s tranquility and the town’s vibrant culture. After exploring local wineries, farms, and parks, returning to Airlie offers a luxurious refuge to unwind. exceptional dining options that highlight seasonal, local ingredients, Airlie stands as the perfect complement to a day spent discovering the historical and natural beauty of Warrenton. This delightful combination ensures that every visit is not just memorable but also a unique celebration of Virginia’s rich landscape and heritage.
