24 Hours in Virginia Beach: Food, Frights & Fireworks

Virginia Beach has a way of making a quick getaway feel like a real vacation.

You don’t have to plan every minute. You don’t need a packed itinerary. Sometimes all you need is an oceanfront hotel, a little sunshine, good food, and enough time to slow down.

That was exactly what I wanted from my recent overnight trip to Virginia Beach and somehow, in just 24 hours, I managed to fit in beach time, the boardwalk, a Ferris wheel, seafood, surfing, a great dinner, a little nightlife, fireworks, a few frights, and a relaxing breakfast by the ocean.

So if you only have one night in Virginia Beach, here’s how I’d spend it.

My 24-Hour Virginia Beach Itinerary

Only have one night? Here’s how I packed a whole lot of Virginia Beach fun into 24 hours.

  • 🌊 Check In: Get settled at your oceanfront hotel
  • 🚶‍♀️ Boardwalk: Walk, shop, explore, and take in the ocean views
  • 🎡 Ferris Wheel: Get a different view of the Virginia Beach Oceanfront
  • 🦀 Lunch: Seafood and ocean views at Ocean Eddie’s
  • 🏖️ Beach Time: Slow down and enjoy the sand and waves
  • 🏄‍♀️ Adventure: Check out Atlantic Park Surf
  • 🍽️ Dinner: Enjoy a coastal night out at The Hampton Social
  • 🍹 Evening: Grab a drink and head back toward the boardwalk
  • 🎆 Fireworks: Watch the sky light up over the ocean
  • 👻 Nightmare Mansion: Add a little fright to your night
  • Breakfast: Start the next morning with breakfast at Sea Salt Grill

My advice: Don’t try to do everything. Pick the experiences that sound like you and leave yourself enough time to actually enjoy the beach.

Packing for a Virginia Beach getaway

Check In and Get Into Vacation Mode

My first stop was checking into my oceanfront hotel.

And honestly, location matters when you’re only in town for 24 hours.

Staying near the oceanfront meant I could walk out of the hotel and immediately feel like I was on vacation. No complicated transportation plans. No wasting precious getaway time driving from place to place.

Just step outside, feel the ocean breeze, and decide what sounds fun.

After dropping off my things, I headed out to explore some of the beach shops along the strip.

I have always loved wandering through beach stores. Maybe it’s the nostalgia of childhood beach vacations, but there’s something about browsing sunglasses, cover-ups, sunscreen, beach accessories, and souvenirs that instantly puts me in vacation mode.

And yes, I usually find something I didn’t know I needed!

Walk the Virginia Beach Boardwalk

After a little shopping, it was time to hit the boardwalk.

If you visit Virginia Beach, you have to walk the boardwalk. It’s one of those simple experiences that shouldn’t be rushed.

During the day, you can take in the ocean views, people-watch, stop for a snack, browse the shops, and watch the activity along the shoreline.

As the sun starts to go down, the entire atmosphere changes.

The lights come on, the oceanfront starts to sparkle, and the boardwalk takes on a completely different personality.

My advice?

Don’t make the boardwalk another item to check off your list. Walk it without a plan. Stop when something catches your eye. Take pictures. Look at the ocean. Let yourself wander.

That’s part of the Virginia Beach experience.

Take a Ride on the Ferris Wheel

While exploring the boardwalk, I decided to make a stop at Atlantic Amusement Park and ride the Ferris wheel.

And I’m so glad I did.

There’s something nostalgic about riding a Ferris wheel at the beach. Once you’re up in the air, you get a completely different perspective of Virginia Beach.

You can see the coastline stretching out beside you, the boardwalk below, the oceanfront hotels, and the energy of the city.

It’s one of those moments when you stop and think, Yep, I’m definitely at the beach.

And let’s be honest, I’m always looking for a good photo opportunity!

Lunch at Ocean Eddie’s

By this point, I was ready for food.

I headed over to Ocean Eddie’s for lunch and ordered oysters and crab dip.

This was exactly the kind of meal I wanted on a Virginia Beach getaway. Seafood, ocean views, and a relaxed atmosphere basically everything I expect from a coastal vacation.

If the weather cooperates, I definitely recommend sitting outside.

There’s something about eating seafood with the ocean right there beside you that makes the experience better.

Sometimes the setting really is part of the meal.

Beach Time Is Non-Negotiable

After lunch, I finally settled into what I really came to Virginia Beach for: the beach.

And this is where I think we sometimes get vacations wrong.

We try to do too much.

We create a schedule so packed that we forget to actually enjoy where we are.

I didn’t want that on this trip.

I wanted time to sit in the sand, listen to the waves, feel the sun, and simply do nothing for a while.

There is something about being near the ocean that makes everything feel a little quieter.

The beach became my reset button.

And even though I only had 24 hours, that time doing absolutely nothing made the trip feel so much longer.

Add Some Adventure at Atlantic Park Surf

After some much-needed beach time and a quick return to the hotel, it was time to switch gears.

I headed over to Atlantic Park Surf.

This was such a fun contrast to the slower pace of the beach.

Virginia Beach has always been known for its ocean culture, but experiences like this add a completely different kind of energy to the destination.

I loved watching the activity and soaking up the atmosphere.

Even if you’re not planning to jump on a surfboard yourself, it’s a fun place to add some excitement to your day.

And after spending time lounging on the beach, I was ready for a little action.

Dinner at The Hampton Social

By dinner time, I had definitely worked up an appetite.

I decided to check out The Hampton Social, and it turned out to be one of the highlights of the trip.

The atmosphere has that coastal-night-out feeling that works perfectly after a day at the beach.

I ordered quite a spread, including oysters, dynamite shrimp, lobster melt, tomato bisque, blackened ribeye, and banana crème.

Yes, I was hungry.

And yes, it was worth it!

The food, drinks, atmosphere, and overall experience made dinner feel like more than just another stop on the itinerary. It felt like the evening had officially begun.

I love when a restaurant becomes part of the destination experience instead of simply being somewhere you go to eat.

This was definitely one of those places.

Skinny Margaritas and Fireworks

After dinner, I headed back toward the boardwalk.

I walked toward the pier and eventually stopped for a skinny margarita.

By this point, Virginia Beach was in full evening mode.

The lights were glowing, people were out enjoying the night, and there was that unmistakable energy that comes with being at the beach after dark.

And then came my favorite part.

Fireworks Over the Ocean

I actually planned my trip around the fireworks because I knew I wanted to experience them.

And I’m glad I did.

There is something special about watching fireworks over the water. The sound carries across the ocean, the sky lights up, and everyone around you stops for a few minutes to simply watch.

It was one of those moments that made me forget about the clock and just enjoy where I was.

If you’re planning a Virginia Beach getaway around a fireworks night, check the current schedule before you go and build your evening around the show.

It’s a pretty great way to turn an ordinary overnight into a memory.

A Little Fright at Nightmare Mansion

Just when you might think the day was winding down, I decided to add one more adventure.

Because why have a perfectly relaxing beach day when you can finish it with a few screams?

Nightmare Mansion in Virginia Beach

After the fireworks, I walked back toward the resort strip and stopped at Nightmare Mansion.

Located on Atlantic Avenue, Nightmare Mansion has been scaring visitors at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront since 1989 and is billed as the East Coast’s longest-running walk-through haunted house.

And let me tell you, this isn’t exactly a peaceful stroll through the neighborhood.

Inside, you’re moving through dark, narrow spaces with live actors, unexpected scares, and plenty of moments designed to make you wonder what is waiting around the next corner.

What I liked about adding Nightmare Mansion to the night was the contrast.

Earlier in the day, I was sitting on the beach listening to the waves. Then I was watching fireworks over the ocean. And suddenly I’m walking into a haunted house trying not to jump at every sound.

That’s what made it fun.

It wasn’t something I originally thought I needed to add to a Virginia Beach overnight, but it ended up giving the trip a completely different personality.

If you’re looking for a classic haunted-house experience while you’re at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront, this is definitely one to consider. Just know that it is designed with older teens and adults in mind and can be an intense experience.

And don’t worry, I won’t spoil what happens inside.

Some scares are better experienced than explained.

A Quiet Morning at Sea Salt Grill

After a full day of exploring and a pretty eventful night, I slept well.

The next morning, I wanted something easy and relaxing before heading home, so I stopped at Sea Salt Grill for breakfast.

Waking up near the ocean already puts you in a different frame of mind.

Add a good breakfast and an ocean view, and it’s a pretty perfect way to close out a beach getaway.

After the excitement of the night before, breakfast gave me a chance to slow down again before getting back to reality.

And honestly, I wasn’t ready to leave!

Why I Love a Virginia Beach Overnight

This trip reminded me that you don’t need a week-long vacation to feel like you’ve gotten away.

Sometimes 24 hours is enough.

My Virginia Beach overnight was a little bit of everything I love about the destination:

  • Oceanfront relaxation
  • A walk along the boardwalk
  • A little nostalgic beach shopping
  • A Ferris wheel ride
  • Fresh seafood
  • Plenty of beach time
  • A fun experience at Atlantic Park Surf
  • A memorable dinner
  • Drinks and nightlife
  • Fireworks over the ocean
  • A little nighttime adventure at Nightmare Mansion
  • A slow breakfast before heading home

And the best part?

I never felt like I was rushing from one attraction to another.

That’s what makes Virginia Beach such an easy getaway.

You can plan every detail if that’s your style—or you can check into your hotel, walk toward the ocean, and figure the rest out as you go.

Ready to Take a Walk in Virginia Beach?

If you’ve been putting off a Virginia Beach getaway because you don’t have several days to spare, take this as your sign.

Book the overnight.

Pack your flip flops.

Walk the boardwalk.

Eat the seafood.

Stay on the beach long enough to actually relax.

Stay up for the fireworks.

And maybe add a little fright while you’re at it.

Because sometimes the best vacations aren’t the longest ones.

They’re the ones that leave you thinking, “I really needed that.”

And that’s exactly how I felt after my 24 hours in Virginia Beach.

Until the next adventure,
