During my visit I attended the 10th Annual Fauquier County Wine Showcase, which was a highlight of my visit. The event brought together an impressive selection of local vineyards, allowing guests to explore various wines that exemplify the diverse terroir of Virginia. Each winery presented its own unique offerings, featuring everything from crisp whites to bold reds, along with options that celebrated innovative blends.

Tasting the wines was an experience in itself. Each winemaker explained the layers of flavors accompanied by tales of their vineyards or about their dedication to sustainable practices and artisanal crafting. Engaging with the winemakers provided deeper insights into their passionate approach to viticulture, making the wine showcase not only a tasting but an education in Virginia’s viticultural landscape. The event invited attendees to immerse themselves in the stories behind each bottle. The wine showcase was a wonderful way to deepen the appreciation for the art of winemaking and the area.

A Culinary Experience

Culinary enthusiasts will find their taste buds tantalized at Airlie’s on-site dining options. The farm-to-table philosophy ensures that guests enjoy fresh, seasonal ingredients sourced from local farms and gardens. The thoughtfully crafted menu not only showcases the best of Virginia’s produce but also reflects the rich culinary traditions of the region. Dining at Airlie is not just a meal; it’s an experience that delights the senses, making every dish a celebration of local flavors.

Complementing the wine showcase, I had the pleasure of attending a wine dinner that highlighted the culinary excellence of the region. As a foodie this was one of the standout features of my visit to Airlie and an exquisite culinary journey where each course was thoughtfully paired with selected wines. The chefs showcased their skills, crafting dishes that enhance the flavors of the wines, resulting in an unforgettable meals of thoughtfully prepared dishes, showcasing the bounty of Virginia’s farms. 

Each course was a symphony of flavors, demonstrating how the culinary arts in Virginia have evolved to reflect local ingredients and traditions. From fresh vegetables sourced directly from nearby farms to artisanal cheeses and meats, every element on the plate harmonized beautifully with the wines being featured. Guests enjoyed Caramelized Pear Salad paired with Barboursville Viognier 2024, followed by Braised Beef Cheeks with wild mushrooms, creamed potatoes, wilted kale and a red wine sauce paired with Barboursville Cabernet Franc 2023. For dessert, the Dark Chocolate Fondant with raspberry coulis was served with a glass of Taylor Fladgate 10-Year-Old Tawny Porto and the perfect finale! The atmosphere was warm and inviting, encouraging guests to savor not only the food and wine but the camaraderie that blossomed among fellow attendees. Conversations flowed easily, fueled by the shared joy of discovering local flavors and the stories behind them.

Exploring Warrenton, Virginia

Even without a specific event on the calendar, Airlie and the surrounding area offers plenty to explore. Just a short drive from Airlie lies the quaint town of Warrenton, Virginia a treasure trove of history and community spirit. Warrenton is known for its well-preserved architecture and inviting downtown area, where unique shops and local eateries beckon. As you stroll through the charming streets, you can soak in the rich history reflected in the town’s buildings and learn about local heritage that adds depth to any visit.

The close proximity of Warrenton enhances the Airlie experience, allowing guests to immerse themselves in both the estate’s tranquility and the town’s vibrant culture. After exploring local wineries, farms, and parks, returning to Airlie offers a luxurious refuge to unwind. exceptional dining options that highlight seasonal, local ingredients, Airlie stands as the perfect complement to a day spent discovering the historical and natural beauty of Warrenton. This delightful combination ensures that every visit is not just memorable but also a unique celebration of Virginia’s rich landscape and heritage.

A Winter Day at Ford’s Theater: Breakfast in Bed and a Piece of History

I indulged in the perfect start to my second day with a delightful breakfast in bed. I savored crispy, golden waffles topped with fresh fruit and drizzled with syrup, accompanied by a rich caramel macchiato. The comfort and indulgence set the mood for an adventure steeped in history.

After breakfast I spent the day exploring the city. Unfortunately during my visit the partial government shut down had many museums and tours closed. Luckily one of my chosen stops Ford’s Theater was open. This historic site known for its significant role in American history as the location where President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated. During my walk to the theater I got to enjoy how the snow had transformed the city into a picturesque winter wonderland. Snow coated the streets and buildings in a soft white blanket, adding an extra magical touch to my visit.

The theater, with its charming architecture, stood as a reminder of a pivotal moment in American history. Stepping inside, I was greeted by exhibits that chronicled Lincoln’s life and legacy. Each display offered a glimpse into the world of the 1860s, providing context to the tragic events that unfolded here.

As I explored, I reflected on the night of April 14, 1865, when Lincoln, accompanied by his wife Mary, attended the play “Our American Cousin.” The ambiance of the theater was lively, filled with laughter unbeknownst to the audience, tragedy loomed just moments away. John Wilkes Booth’s fateful decision to pull the trigger not only ended Lincoln’s life but altered the trajectory of a nation.

Standing in the theater, I imagined the chaos and shock that ensued that night. The guides shared vivid accounts of the events, making me feel deeply connected to the past. The weight of history felt heaviest in those moments, as I thought about how such a singular act changed the fabric of our country forever.

Visiting the Petersen Boarding House

Following my time at the theater, I made my way to the Petersen Boarding House, where Lincoln took his final breaths. Just across the street from Ford’s Theater, the house maintains a somber atmosphere. As I entered, the interiors captured the simplicity of the era. The room where Lincoln died was both haunting and poignant, adorned with artifacts that told the story of his last moments.

The contrast of the cold, stark snow outside created a silent reminder of that fateful night, emphasizing the stark reality of such unthinkable loss. Standing in the very spot where history unfolded was a humbling experience that drew me even closer to the legacy of Lincoln.

A Day to Remember

As I left the boarding house, I couldn’t help but feel a mix of emotions. The beauty of the snow-covered city captured the essence of a winter day, yet the weight of history lingered heavily in my heart. My visit to Ford’s Theater and the boarding house was more than just a sightseeing trip; it was a deep dive into a narrative that shaped a nation.

To enhance your own Washington, DC weekend getaway, consider exploring the museums and going to the National Mall after dark for a stroll among the beautifully lit monuments. You could also spend your day on a bus tour or visiting local vineyards for a wine tasting or enjoying intimate conversations at a cozy café. If you’re interested in experiencing the arts scene, check out regional theater productions or live music shows for a bit of entertainment during your visit.

To conclude my busy day exploring I enjoyed a stop at a cafe for coffee and then had diner at the Hotel Lobby Bar. Returning to my room I warmed up with a bubble bath and caught up on my latest read. Winter is truly a beautiful time to relax and enjoy a weekend getaway!

This itinerary gave an escape that beautifully combined luxury, exploration, and special moments in the heart of Washington, DC. From sipping cocktails and dining with 360 views at the Skydome, to touring the city, and enjoying the cozy vibes of winter this Washington, DC weekend is sure to become a cherished memory!

Think outside of the jumbo stuffed bears and flowers this year and make whatever you plan for Valentine’s Day as unique and special as your relationship with your significant other.

It is that time of the year for commercials on bouquets of flowers, huge teddy bears and the tv to be bombarded with ads mostly directed towards men to buy expensive jewelry. These ads often come off with the attitude that if men don’t buy their wife, girlfriend or significant other the newest and most expensive piece of bling they will disappoint them.

I think sometimes we get too caught up on the commercial aspect of things and on the materialistic. Many forget about simple exchanges of sharing love and kindness with others. Going into debt to try to impress someone isn’t worth the effort and I want to encourage you to think of more unique and heartfelt gift ideas this Valentine’s Day.

There are many things you can gift that won’t fit in a traditional gift box or break the bank. These gifts however may mean even more though than something to be put up on a shelf. Some of these types of gifts are free or low cost, yet carry worth and value to the one you’ve gifted it to.

Ideas for Free Valentine Gifts

Doing something for someone out of kindness can be both rewarding and valuable. Making a coupon/voucher to give to someone as a gift is a great example of a free gift to give. For example, a mom might enjoy a kids free night where the giver of the voucher can watch the children while she relaxes.

A handwritten Valentine’s Day card can be meaningful in itself.

Other coupon ideas could include: a massages, cooking dinner, helping with a household task, and many other things. These coupons/vouchers can even be added into a Valentine’s card or given on their own. These ideas are simple, but can be very meaningful and greatly appreciated.

The Gift of Food

Giving the gift of food can be a relatively low cost gift. Making cookies, soup, bread or even a full meal and delivering it to a friend or family member can speak volumes of love and kindness. Some say nothing says loving like something from the oven! I know I personally appreciate when someone takes the time out to cook something for me.

A simple $1 pack of clear food bags can make a treat more festive and fun.

Colorful packaging like Valentine’s themed food bags or ziplocks can add to this type of gift and make it festive. Mason jars make the perfect storage for soup gifting and cake/cookie mixes for example. Sharing a favorite recipe with someone in the process so they can remake the item or a story/history about the food item can add to the originality of the gift.

If you’re not someone that can cook or enjoys to cook giving a pre-made food gift can be a good choice as well. Many bakeries will be offering special Valentine’s themed treats for takeout and delivery. If you’re not into baked goods or sweets you can send something salty or savory snacks. Food gifts are perfect for men, women and children as most people enjoy snack foods. These gifts don’t even have to be Valentine themed.

If you’re not the crafty type there are kits to help make crafting easy. A dollar picture frame with a favorite photo plus a few stickers or some writing is another easy craft idea to make. The uniqueness of this gift is often in the imperfections.

Sometimes the most simple and quiet moments are the ones that make the best memories. One of my favorite gifts to give personally is an experience. This type of gift won’t fit into a gift box with a pretty bow, but the love and memories will wrap themselves around and last forever. Something as simple as planning a picnic for a loved one in their favorite spot could be magical and cost effective. In addition if you know a museum, sporting event or place they would like to go check online and sometimes free or low cost tickets can be found.
