Thomas Jefferson’s retreat, Poplar Forest is also located near Lynchburg, Virginia. This area was Thomas Jefferson’s private retreat and plantation. It’s known for its unique octagonal design, which Jefferson himself designed. The estate offers tours where visitors can explore the grounds, and the restored mansion, and learn about Jefferson’s life and his vision for Poplar Forest. It’s a fascinating destination for history enthusiasts and those interested in early American architecture.

Be sure to plan your trip during its operational months from March to December. You can repurchase tickets or purchase tickets at the visitor’s center. On site, you’ll learn about the estate’s rich history through exhibits and an introductory video. Guided tours are available, offering insights into Thomas Jefferson’s life, his architectural masterpiece, and the estate’s historical significance.

I enjoyed exploring the beautifully landscaped grounds, including gardens, walking trails, and archaeological sites. Don’t miss the opportunity to tour the octagonal mansion, meticulously restored to its former glory. Poplar Forest often hosts special events and educational programs too, so check their website for updates.

Day Trips and Nearby Attractions

Enjoy fresh seafood, gourmet burgers, and craft cocktails while taking in views from the outdoor patio. There are plenty of choices for food in Lynchburg. Wherever you decide to eat you can’t go wrong.

There are plenty of things to do and see in Emerald Isle. One of the most popular of course is relaxing on the sandy shores and soaking up the sun. At the beach, you can take a refreshing dip in the clear waters of the Atlantic Ocean, search for seashells, sand dollars, and other treasures along the shoreline, or get creative and build a sand sculpture with the whole family. You can always catch some waves at popular surf spots like The Point or Emerald Isle Beach too.

If you’re not into beach activities try casting a line from the shore, pier, or charter boat and reel in some fresh catches of the day. Bogue Inlet Fishing Pier is a favorite spot for fishing and scenic views. If you’re looking to get on the water there are several areas where you can explore the calm waters of the sound or nearby estuaries by kayak, spot wildlife along the way, or try Stand-Up Paddleboarding (SUP) and paddle along the coastline, enjoy panoramic views of the island.


One of my favorite things to do on vacation in North Carolina is to visit the North Carolina Aquariums and there is one close by at Pine Knoll Shores. Here you’ll discover marine life native to the North Carolina coast through interactive exhibits and educational programs. Taking a drive along the Crystal Coast or a ferry in Beaufort to nearby Cape Lookout to explore its pristine beaches, historic lighthouse, and unique coastal habitats is also a great way to spend the day. Exploring the historic lighthouse at Cape Lookout Lighthouse or the nearby Cape Hatteras Lighthouse gives unmatched panoramic views of the coastline. For a shorter trip, I recommend taking the sunset Shackleford Banks cruise.


If you enjoy hiking and biking I would recommend a trip through the scenic trails of Emerald Isle Woods Park, a peaceful nature preserve with lush vegetation and wildlife. You can also rent a bike and cruise along scenic bike paths or explore the island’s neighborhoods and parks. For those that enjoy fishing The Bogue Inlet Pier is an iconic landmark that stretches out into the Atlantic Ocean, offering breathtaking views and endless opportunities for fishing enthusiasts.

Cast a line or simply strolling along the pier and you’ll be treated to panoramic vistas of the coastline and the shimmering waters beyond. It’s a perfect spot to enjoy the sunrise or sunset, feel the gentle sea breeze, and soak in the natural beauty of the Crystal Coast. Additionally, the pier is often a hub of activity, with locals and visitors alike gathering to fish, socialize, and take in the tranquil ambiance of this coastal paradise.

If you’re an avid angler or simply seeking a serene escape by the sea, the Bogue Inlet Pier is a must-visit destination for anyone exploring the charms of this picturesque beach town. During my visit, I enjoyed wandering along the iconic boardwalk, where bustling shops, lively entertainment, and mouthwatering eateries await at every turn. From souvenir shops to art galleries and seafood shacks serving up the freshest catches, the boardwalk is a vibrant hub of activity that captures the essence of Virginia Beach’s coastal charm.

During my stay, I enjoyed stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean from the cozy comfort of my beachfront studio rental, tailored for those who adore the beach. I liked the benefit of a designated parking spot mere steps away from the shoreline and immersing myself in the sand and waves without the need to navigate busy streets.

As a work-from-anywhere nomad, I appreciated being able to connect with complimentary Wi-Fi and relax with Roku TV access throughout my stay. After a day of seaside bliss, taking a dip in the refreshing saltwater pool or unwinding on the lush lawn, just moments away from the beach was bliss.

I loved how this condo’s kitchen comes fully equipped too with all the culinary needs, from pots and pans to a K-cup coffee maker, microwave, electric range/oven, and refrigerator/freezer. There is a saltwater pool and the property is just moments from the beach visible outside the window. It was easy to unwind without straying far from my accommodations. This condo’s location makes it easy to access the city’s top attractions, including museums, shopping areas, and restaurants. Plus, with multiple public transit options nearby exploring the city is a breeze.
