Colonial Beach: The Hidden Gem of Virginia’s Northern Neck

Sponsored| Colonial Beach is the kind of place that sneaks up on you. This small-town on the Potomac River and Virginia’s Northern Neck will make you want to slow down, breathe deeply, and settle in for a few days. During my recent visit, I discovered why locals and travelers alike keep coming back to this coastal treasure.

What especially struck me during my visit was how Colonial Beach manages to pack so much into such a walkable, intimate setting. In just three days, I found myself bouncing between a lively 75th River Festival buzzing with energy and locals, sipping craft brews at unique spots, exploring the area’s rich colonial history at the James Monroe Museum, discovering a thriving local art scene, and sampling some genuinely impressive food at spots that punch well above their weight for a town this size. A golf cart became my chariot of choice and was the perfect way to navigate the town’s tree-lined streets without the formality of a car, letting me stop whenever something caught my eye.

Home Base: The Riverview Inn

Staying at the Riverview Inn immediately set the tone for my Colonial Beach getaway. Originally built in 1948 this charming Inn has been lovingly restored to capture all the nostalgic charm of a 1950s beachside retreat while still offering the modern comforts you actually need. The moment you see the iconic teal and red building glowing softly in the evening light, you know you’ve found something special.

What makes the Riverview Inn truly stand out though is the personal touches throughout the property. The rooms are uniquely decorated and no two are exactly alike with fun themes that celebrate the area’s character. Here you’ll find hand-painted beach scenes on the dressers or whimsical room names that add a playful spirit to your stay. The owners, have clearly poured their hearts into this restoration, and it shows in every detail. The rooms feature modern amenities like smart HDTVs and thoughtful extras like complimentary coffee and water are waiting for you.

The location is absolutely unbeatable as you’re literally just a half block from the Colonial Beach Boardwalk and the Potomac River. This proximity means you can easily walk to virtually everywhere in town: the shops, the restaurants, the fishing pier, and the main beach area are all within a few minutes on foot. It’s the kind of location that makes renting a golf cart even more enjoyable because you’ve got the option to park it and explore on foot too.

See Colonial Beach Like a Local: Cruisin Tikis

Colonial Beach is famous for its boardwalk and beach bars, but locals know where the real magic happens out on Monroe Creek. During your visit plan to experience a side of Colonial Beach that most tourists never find and copy my itinerary with a boat ride on the Cruisin Tiki. Monroe Creek is quiet, peaceful and it’s exactly why they’ve kept it to themselves. Here the osprey aren’t just birds they’re the heartbeat of this hidden corner. Watch them hunt, dive, and soar over glassy water. This ecosystem truly makes this town special and you’ll get the best views by boat.

Osprey nest on top of boat seen while cruising on Monroe Creek.

If you’re not familiar with Cruisin Tiki’s it is the one experience that perfectly captures the laid-back spirit of Colonial Beach. This U.S. Coast Guard-compliant tiki boat launches right from the local Yacht Center. The concept is refreshingly simple: you and up to five friends board a hand-crafted bamboo boat captained by a professional, bring your own snacks and beverages, and cruise the scenic waters of Monroe Creek for some pure relaxation.

The boat is surprisingly comfortable and well-designed, featuring seating for six passengers plus your captain, a freshwater sink and cooler full of ice, a Bluetooth speaker system, reinforced bamboo railings, and shade for every seat during the day. As you glide across Monroe Bay, you’ll understand why locals will tell you this is where the best sunsets in town happen and the photos don’t lie.

This is what a real tiki boat ride should be: not crowded, not rushed, just you/your friends, the water, and the wildlife that calls Monroe Creek home. Cruisin Tiki’s takes you where the locals actually go.

Dockside Restaurant and Tiki Bar

Here’s my insider tip: time your cruise to depart right around late afternoon and grab lunch or an early dinner from Dockside Restaurant and Tiki Bar beforehand. Dockside is literally steps from where the Tikis launch. It’s the perfect pre-cruise meal, and you can enjoy your food with water views before boarding. This full restaurant and tiki bar has an air-conditioned dining room, a private beach area for patrons, and live music on the outdoor stage most weekends. I tried the fried mozzarella and the shrimp and grits plus a couple cocktails and everything was awesome!

A Culinary Tour: Colonial Beach’s Best Bites

I was thrilled to discover that Colonial Beach has an impressive food and beverage scene with fresh Italian, vibrant Latin flavors, fresh seafood, craft beers, wine and sophisticated French-Asian fusion, the dining options here celebrate quality ingredients and genuine hospitality. During my weekend, I made it my mission to sample as many spots as possible and I wasn’t disappointed.

High Tides on The Potomac

High Tides is everything a beachfront restaurant should be and it’s become something of an institution in Colonial Beach since opening on the boardwalk. The restaurant boasts a strong emphasis on top-quality steaks and fresh seafood, with picturesque water views and a beachfront patio that’s hard to beat. Alongside the main restaurant, The Black Pearl Tiki Bar next door features live music under the stars, with an outdoor sand-floor concert area that feels legitimately special.  I grabbed pizza and tropical drinks here, and the combination was perfect!

Los Hermanos Cantina

Just steps away at the Bayside Marina, Los Hermanos Cantina serves up some of the best and fastest Mexican food in the Northern Neck. The brightly-colored space features outdoor waterfront seating with views of Monroe Creek’s famous sunsets, and their cocktails are genuinely worth the trip. I tried the ahi tuna tacos here plus a watermelon margarita and both were delicious!

Pier 909

Pier 909 I was told is a relatively new addition to Colonial Beach’s dining scene, and it’s already making waves. This upscale Italian restaurant offers both brunch and dinner service. I had brunch here and tried their ricotta pancakes and the traditional breakfast. I loved how the walls here were decorated with authentic Italian memories and that it seemed to be a local favorite.

Colonial Beach Brewing

I found Colonial Beach Brewing to be more than just a brewer but a gathering place with great beer and surprisingly solid food. As one of the Northern Neck’s first craft breweries, they’ve even earned some awards and accolades. The atmosphere here is casual and welcoming, with board games, live music, and an outdoor garden area. I tried their Mediterranean bowl which features fresh ingredients and authentic flavors (one of the owners has Greek family heritage, so you know it’s done right).

Sunflower

Sunflower was another unexpected find in this small town and is located in a historic Esso service station building. This restaurant seamlessly blends French and Thai culinary traditions with a menu featuring beautiful sushi, aromatic ramen, delicate sushi rolls, and vibrant curries. Here every dish arrives looking almost too pretty to eat! They offer both indoor and outdoor patio seating, and occasionally feature live music on the patio making it ideal for a special evening out. I tried the Colonial Island Roll, the sautéed scallops, shrimp curry and a Sunflower cocktail. The flavors were excellent and I would love to try other things on their menu.

The Pink Poodle Ice Cream

No food tour of Colonial Beach I was told would be complete without a stop at The Pink Poodle for ice cream. Along with hand-dipped ice cream, they serve shakes, smoothies, and sno-cones. The highlight? Their ice cream nachos! I tried this creation during my visit which included three scoops of ice cream your choice flavors, topped with whipped cream, nuts and a cherry all over waffle cone style nachos. The outdoor picnic seating made it the perfect final stop on any day of exploring.

Icehouse Marina & Brewery

Situated on the water, Icehouse Marina & Brewery combines craft brewery, casual cafe, and working marina in one lively complex, making it ideal for both boaters and landlubbers. This waterfront destination perfectly captures the relaxed vibe of Colonial Beach. The outdoor boat bar is so fun and provides a quintessential waterfront experience, while the stylish interior and generous indoor and outdoor seating areas mean there’s always a comfortable spot to settle in.

I grabbed drinks here one evening and caught live music, which seems to be a regular feature that adds real energy to the space and also returned back for breakfast. I found that the whole business captures that dock. dine. drink. stay. spirit that makes Colonial Beach so appealing.

Ingleside Winery

Just a short drive outside downtown Colonial Beach lies Ingleside Winery, one of Virginia’s oldest and largest wineries. This winery sits on 70 acres of pristine countryside in the Northern Neck. Surrounded by the rich American history of the region the winery now operates from what were once the estate’s dairy barns.

Ingleside has been producing award-winning wines since 1980. Today they produce a varieties of wine that have consistently earned top honors in state, national, and international wine competitions. The tasting experience is genuine/personal and not commercial or rushed with knowledgeable staff who actually enjoy talking about the wines. I enjoyed a wine flight and a cheese plate, sampling from their impressive portfolio of reds, whites, and rosés.

What makes Ingleside unique is the setting itself. The European-style courtyard feels like sitting on someone’s welcoming back porch, with plenty of indoor and outdoor space depending on the season. The winery frequently hosts events, including a summer music series that brings wine lovers from throughout the region.

A Connection to Presidential History

Surprisingly this region is also steeped in American presidential heritage. While you’re enjoying the waterfront attractions and modern restaurants, you’re literally treading on ground shaped by the nation’s founding and one of its most important figures was born right here.

The James Monroe Birthplace & Museum

During my visit I learned President James Monroe, the fifth President of the United States, was born at a modest farmhouse just outside Colonial Beach. His birthplace sits on land where his father, Spence Monroe, built a simple four-room dwelling for his family. The original home is long gone, but the site has been beautifully restored and now features a museum, a replica of Monroe’s childhood home, and a scenic visitor center.

I encourage you to visit the James Monroe Birthplace & Boyhood Home Park & Museum to enjoy the walking trails, historical markers, canoe launch, benches, and an 18th-century garden planted by members of the Virginia Federation of Garden Clubs. Here you’ll find the museum itself is well-designed, with knowledgeable docents who love sharing stories about Monroe’s life, his family, and his impact on American history and foreign policy. It’s a thought-provoking counterpoint to Colonial Beach’s modern recreational energy and a reminder that this quiet Northern Neck town has played an outsized role in shaping American history.

Shopping & Local Art

I loved that Colonial Beach offers a charming mix of boutique shops and galleries that showcase both local talent and unique finds. There are lots of places to browse for souvenirs, home décor, or original artwork. The town’s walkable downtown makes it easy to explore multiple spots in an afternoon.

I couldn’t resist checking out Magnolia Hall which is a charming boutique with clothing, home decor, and unique gadgets. It’s the perfect spot to find something special without the chain-store experience. I also visited Hawthorn Mercantile which offers a curated selection of local goods and souvenirs that capture the essence of Colonial Beach. One of my favorite stops was the CB Creative Art Center. This center features rotating displays of local and regional artwork in various media including paintings, photography, mixed media, and sculpture from talented artists in the area. I even picked up some beautiful local art here that serves as a perfect memento of the trip.

The most surprising place I visited though was the CB Train Junction which is a must-visit if you’re a train enthusiast (or traveling with one), with two impressive board layouts, historic toy trains, memorabilia, and model railroading supplies. The gift shop is packed with novelty items and unique gifts for anyone who loves trains. The owner is so passionate about his craft and even restores classic toy trains, bringing them back to life with expert care and attention.

A Weekend to Remember

When planning your trip to the area make sure to check out the local events! My trip to Colonial Beach was made even more special by the timing of the 75th Annual Potomac River Festival and I cannot explain how amazing it was to witness the camaraderie and genuine small-town excitement that electrified the entire weekend. The Fireman’s Parade, officially recognized as the Nation’s Loudest Fireman’s Parade consists of fire and EMS units from Virginia and Maryland converging on Colonial Beach. With sirens wailing, air horns blasting, and lights flashing the streets were packed with spectators cheering them on, and the energy was absolutely contagious.

Saturday brought the Grand Feature Parade, a vibrant procession of decorated floats, performers, and hometown pride that wound through the heart of town. Beyond the parades, the weekend included a Pet Parade with adorable dogs in creative costumes, a Boat Parade showcasing beautifully decorated vessels gliding along the Potomac, vendors lining the boardwalk and live musical performances on the Town Hill Stage. The festival was topped off with a spectacular fireworks display over the Potomac River and it made the perfect backdrop to an already incredible getaway.

Colonial Beach is a destination that truly has something for everyone with historic charm, exceptional food and drink, local art and shopping, outdoor adventures, and a welcoming community. For those planning a family getaway, a quick escape with friends or even a solo trip this waterfront gem delivers unforgettable memories and reasons to come back again and again.

The Trading Post, Emerald Isle

The Trading Post is a casual restaurant where southern hospitality meets coastal flavors. This local treasure offers an inviting vibe with both indoor and outdoor seating. Here, you can enjoy dishes like their famous Shrimp-n-Grits, featuring sautéed shrimp over homemade cheddar grits, or a delicious seafood boil complete with snow crab legs, mussels, steamed shrimp, potatoes, corn, and sausage. A highlight of my dining experience here was the crab dip and the key lime pie, which was a sweet, tangy ending that left us coming back for more!

Red Oar, Morehead City

This trip, I tried Red Oar, a spot that was new to me. The views here match the quality of the food. This waterfront eatery specializes in raw and steamed seafood, offering everything from fresh oysters to locally caught fish. I tried the soft shell crab and crab cake burger as well as the shrimp tacos, both of which were perfectly seasoned. The laid-back atmosphere makes this an ideal spot for enjoying sunset views while savoring every seafood delight.

The Dock House, Beaufort

In Beaufort, I recommend visiting The Dock House. I had seen many reviews mentioning their soft-shell crabs, harvested right from local waters. If you haven’t guessed it, I love soft-shell crabs! My crabs were fried to crispy perfection with a light, well-seasoned batter. I also ordered a fish sandwich that was huge and overflowing from the bun. Dining upstairs provided incredible views and added extra charm to a memorable dining experience.

Willie’s Seafood Market

For those nights when you want to cook, Willie’s Seafood Market is your go-to place. With everything from freshly caught fish to shrimp and seafood boils, this market allows you to select just what you need for your grill or kitchen. The staff is knowledgeable and ready to offer cooking tips, ensuring you’ll bring a taste of the coast back to your rental. The selection here is always super fresh and reasonably priced, and cooking at your rental can also save you some money, especially if you’re feeding a larger group. They even have essentials like seasonings and lemons to make them a one-stop seafood shopping experience.

Vernon Lee’s Ole Crab Shack

This nostalgic eatery serves up classic seafood dishes like fried fish and their famous hush puppies, bringing you memories of simpler times. Every bite along the Crystal Coast tells a story, from fresh catches to homemade desserts. Each restaurant and market has its unique flair and quality that guarantees an experience worth savoring. On the Crystal Coast, you’ll find flavors that are bound to leave you enchanted.

Discovering Beaufort: A Charming Coastal Town

With its historic charm and breathtaking waterfront views, no trip to the Crystal Coast would be complete without a visit to Beaufort. Renowned for its unparalleled views of the coastline, you’ll find a marina here with boats and ferries providing leisurely shelling trips or evening tours that highlight the beauty of the marshlands while spotting dolphins playfully swimming nearby. These boating experiences create lasting memories, combining stunning views with the calming sounds of nature.

Cruising the Coast

During my visit, I took a tour to experience the diverse marine wildlife right off the coast at Sand Dollar Island. This tiny island is only accessible at high tide, and the beach was adorned with unique shells and sun-bleached sand dollars waiting to be discovered. The thrill of collecting these treasures is a fantastic way to bond with family or friends. Wading out into the crystal water, I also found live sand dollars, a hermit crab, and several clams. During my tour, I saw curious bottlenose dolphins playing in the boat’s wake and glimpsed the Shackleford Banks horses on Carrot Island, creating unforgettable moments.

The Old Burying Ground

A visit to Beaufort isn’t complete without strolling through the Old Burying Ground, where you’ll find graves dating back over 300 years. This serene site provides an intriguing glimpse into the town’s maritime legacy, featuring stories from its pirate history and Native American heritage. Every time I visit, I have to walk among the ancient oaks draped in Spanish moss and pay my respects to those that came before me.

A Sweet Stop at The General Store

When in Beaufort, you’ll find lots of unique shops, and no visit is truly complete without a stop at The General Store, famous for its large selection of ice cream. With flavors ranging from classic vanilla to delightful unique blends, this charming spot quickly becomes a family favorite. Sitting outside with a scoop of ice cream while watching the boats sail by is a perfect way to cool off after a day filled with beach activities. The store’s friendly atmosphere makes it an inviting place to unwind and enjoy the local flavor.

Discovering Cape Lookout National Seashore

Another highlight of my Crystal Coast trip was taking a short boat ride from Harkers Island to the stunning Cape Lookout National Seashore, a true treasure of the North Carolina coast. This barrier island paradise features breathtaking scenery, unspoiled beaches, and abundant wildlife. Visitors can enjoy walking the sandy shores, collecting shells, and spotting various bird species.

One of the distinctive characteristics of Cape Lookout is the iconic lighthouse, which stands as a beacon of history. Visitors can climb the 207 steps to the top for breathtaking panoramic views of the beach and surrounding waters. The lighthouse’s distinctive black and white diamond pattern is a sight to behold and makes for great photographs. Currently, the lighthouse is under a $15 million restoration, preventing me from exploring inside.

Cape Lookout National Seashore is also known for its incredible shelling and fishing opportunities. Spending time at the beach and visiting Cape Lookout National Seashore creates the perfect blend of relaxation and adventure, making your trip to the Crystal Coast truly unforgettable.

For business or leisure, the accommodations at Airlie ensure that a visitor’s stay is both comfortable and memorable.

The Fauquier County Wine Showcase

During my visit I attended the 10th Annual Fauquier County Wine Showcase, which was a highlight of my visit. The event brought together an impressive selection of local vineyards, allowing guests to explore various wines that exemplify the diverse terroir of Virginia. Each winery presented its own unique offerings, featuring everything from crisp whites to bold reds, along with options that celebrated innovative blends.

Tasting the wines was an experience in itself. Each winemaker explained the layers of flavors accompanied by tales of their vineyards or about their dedication to sustainable practices and artisanal crafting. Engaging with the winemakers provided deeper insights into their passionate approach to viticulture, making the wine showcase not only a tasting but an education in Virginia’s viticultural landscape. The event invited attendees to immerse themselves in the stories behind each bottle. The wine showcase was a wonderful way to deepen the appreciation for the art of winemaking and the area.

Dining at Airlie is not just a meal; it’s an experience that delights the senses, making every dish a celebration of local flavors.

Complementing the wine showcase, I had the pleasure of attending a wine dinner that highlighted the culinary excellence of the region. As a foodie this was one of the standout features of my visit to Airlie and an exquisite culinary journey where each course was thoughtfully paired with selected wines.
