Virginia Beach is the kind of destination that doesn’t ask you to over-plan. You pick a hotel close to the oceanfront, you give yourself enough time to actually slow down, and the rest kind of unfolds on its own. I just took a mini overnight trip to Virginia Beach and by the end of 24 hours I felt recharged in the best way. Read on to learn how to have salt air in your hair, sand on your sandals, and a how is it already morning feeling.

I began my trip by checking into my boardwalk hotel because, in Virginia Beach, location is everything. When you stay near the oceanfront, you stop thinking in terms of getting somewhere and start thinking in terms of walking outside and deciding what mood you want next. The beach is always in the background, so even your casual plans feel like part of the trip.
Once I dropped my stuff, I headed out to beach stores on the strip. This is one of my favorite arrival activities because it’s both practical and fun. You browse, you float into a few storefronts, you grab the things you might have forgot you needed like sunglasses, a cute cover-up, sunscreen, beach accessories or maybe something souvenir-ish that you’ll actually use when you get home. It’s easy, it’s bright, and it instantly puts you in a vacation mindset. If you ever visited a beach store as a child it’s also a little bit nostalgic.
Walk the boardwalk like you mean it (because it’s the point)
After shopping, I made my way to the boardwalk. If you come here and you don’t walk it at least once, you’re missing the heart of the place. The boardwalk is where Virginia Beach turns into a living postcard. It stretches, it changes by the hour, and it always feels connected to the ocean whether you’re there in full daylight, golden hour, or when the lights start coming on and the whole strip feels electric.

I like to let my exploration happen naturally. I spend sometime looking at the ocean, glance at the crowds, stop when something catches my eye and continue my walking when the vibe is good. It’s the kind of stroll that turns into an experience. And because Virginia Beach is never just one thing, while walking I decided to divert and added an attraction that makes the boardwalk feel like a real amusement-escape.
The old beach ferris wheel: a viewpoint that makes everything feel bigger
I walked over to the Atlantic Amusement Park exclusively to ride the old beach Ferris wheel, and honestly, it’s the perfect I’m here moment. It’s old, it’s a bit rusted and it creaks but up high, you see how the oceanfront is laid out, the sweep of the coastline, the flow of the boardwalk, the brightness of the strip and the way the whole area feels lively but relaxed at the same time.

It’s the kind of ride that doesn’t just entertain you for a few minutes; it changes the whole mood and rests you to the moment. Once I got back down, it was clear I was no longer in travel mode. I was in relaxation mode and ready for good food, beach time and for that slow-down feeling that’s hard to recreate anywhere else.

Lunch at Ocean Eddies: oysters + crab dip to fully commit to the vacation
Next was lunch, and I went over to the pier for drinks, oysters and crab dip at Ocean Eddies. This is where my trip really started to feel like a proper overnight getaway, because lunch on the oceanfront is its own kind of luxury. You’re not rushing through a meal. You’re eating in a setting that matches the flavors with salt air, coastal energy, and food that feels like it belongs right here.

Oysters and crab dip made sense at this moment in the day and they were both satisfying, and a little indulgent without being overcomplicated. By the time I finished, I had that perfect mix of fully fueled and ready to lounge. Tip: I suggest sitting outside and soaking up the atmosphere while you dine.

Beach time: the reset button you can’t skip
After lunch I did what I came for: beach time. This part is the difference between a trip that feels like errands and a trip that actually relaxes you. In Virginia Beach, beach time isn’t an activity you squeeze in, it’s the activity that anchors the day. I just let it be simple with the sand, the sounds, the sun and enough time to genuinely unwind.

There’s a calm that comes from being near the ocean and it’s like the noise in your head finally turns itself down. I didn’t feel guilty about taking my time. On a mini trip you enjoy this moment in a way you don’t always allow yourself when you’re on a set plan or have a busier schedule.
The energy at Atlantic Park Surf
After the beach and a return to my hotel I shifted into a different kind of Virginia Beach fun. I went to the new Atlantic Park Surf. What I liked about this stop is that it added a fresh layer to the trip without breaking the vibe. It’s active, it’s modern, and it’s built for fun, even if you’re not trying to be intense about it. It gave the day a little excitement after all the lounging, and it kept the evening from turning into just eat, walk, sleep.

Virginia Beach is constantly updating itself but keeps the ocean culture at the center. This is a neat new experience that might even make you want to stay a little longer. I easily could have spent a whole day soaking up the sunshine and watching the surfers. I almost forgot I was in Virginia because this felt more like a tropical paradise.
A ribeye at The Hampton Social hits like the main event
By the time it was dinner, I was ready! Since I was already at the surf park I decided to checkout one of the new restaurants in the area. I was not disappointed in my choice as The Hampton Social delivered a coastal-night-out feeling, where dining doesn’t just fill you up but it makes the evening feel like it has a plan. To be honest this was the kind of meal that made my whole trip feel complete.

After a beach-and-surf kind of day, their oysters, dynamite shrimp, lobster melt, tomato bisque, blackened ribeye and banana creme were basically the perfect celebration meal. It was rich, satisfying, and exactly what you want when you’re comfortably tired in the best way. I ate slowly, enjoyed crafted cocktails, the atmosphere, and let dinner stretch into the early part of the evening, because that’s when Virginia Beach feels the most effortless.

Skinny margs + guac to keep the night moving
After dinner, I went back to the boardwalk and took a walk to the pier and then decided on Las Palmas for a skinny margarita. This time of the evening on the boardwalk is where the energy becomes playful. The drinks plus the combination of the nightlife around on the boardwalk made the night feel social and easy like you’re hanging out, not just ticking boxes on an itinerary. Even if you’re traveling solo or just keeping it low-key, drinks under twinkling lighted palms seem like something out of a movie.

The best part of Virginia Beach trips especially short ones are when you catch oceanfront fireworks. I specifically planned my trip around this and sat at Las Palamas knowing I’d have a great view. Fireworks over the ocean just hit differently. It’s not all about watching the display here but what you feel in the atmosphere and the whole experience. The ocean carries the sound, the light reflects off the horizon, and suddenly everyone around you seems present enjoying the moment. In today’s fast paced world we could all use a few more present moments.
These fireworks are the easiest way to turn an overnight into a memory that feels bigger than 24 hours. Virginia Beach runs fireworks every Sunday and Wednesday night during the summer. This can be one of those build your trip around it anchors where you can plan the rest loosely, and still end up with an unforgettable finale.
Nightmares & frights
From reading I hope you see Virginia Beach has plenty of relaxing attributes. However this trip I decided to throw in something a little thrilling to give my trip contrast and attempted to balance the beauty and calm with a jolt of fun before I retired for the night. After the fireworks I took a walk back over to the strip and added a little scare into my evening at Nightmare Mansion. It was a small detour and it made the whole trip feel like a proper adventure instead of only a perfectly smooth slow-day.

If you’re not familiar with the area Nightmare Mansion in Virginia Beach is a Halloween-style, walk-through haunted attraction built to feel like you’ve stepped into a deranged house right at the edge of the sea. It’s dark corridors, looming figures, sudden scares, and a constant sense that something is watching from just out of sight. As you move from room to room, the atmosphere shifts between eerie storytelling, jump-scare moments, and spooky set pieces designed to keep you guessing about what’s around the next corner. If you’re looking for a classic get spooked experience, it’s the kind of attraction that leans hard into the thrill of being uncomfortable in the best way. I would say it is part theme park experience and part theatrics. This attraction is also the oldest continuously running walk-through haunted attraction on the East Coast! There is no photography or videography allowed either and you’re forced to focus on the thrills at hand. In the end as you find yourself on a side street you only have your fast paced heartbeats and memories to show for the experience.
Sea Salt Grill breakfast with a view
Exhausted from all my fun I slept well and the next morning I wrapped up my trip with breakfast and a view at Sea Salt Grill. Waking up at the ocean is a whole mood on its own. A classic breakfast is the perfect landing after fireworks and a late night. Sea Salt Grill is cozy, calm, simple and satisfying. A slow morning turns the trip into a complete loop from the excitement at night to recovery in the morning, and that soft feeling that you actually rested.

Why this overnight works (and why you’ll want to come back)
This wasn’t a do everything trip. It was 24 hours built around the best parts about Virginia Beach. Your trip might look different but I was looking to stay to close to my hotel, walking the oceanfront area, shopping nostalgia, eating seafood that matched the setting, beach time that genuinely reset, leveling up with surf park energy, a real coastal-inspired dinner, and oceanfront fireworks. Virginia Beach effortlessly makes relaxation feel like an experience and even a short trip here feels like you really got away. This it is what keeps me coming back!
