It’s known for its unique octagonal design, which Jefferson himself designed. It’s a fascinating destination for history enthusiasts and those interested in early American architecture.

Be sure to plan your trip during its operational months from March to December. You can repurchase tickets or purchase tickets at the visitor’s center. On site, you’ll learn about the estate’s rich history through exhibits and an introductory video. Guided tours are available, offering insights into Thomas Jefferson’s life, his architectural masterpiece, and the estate’s historical significance.

I enjoyed exploring the beautifully landscaped grounds, including gardens, walking trails, and archaeological sites. Don’t miss the opportunity to tour the octagonal mansion, meticulously restored to its former glory. Poplar Forest often hosts special events and educational programs too, so check their website for updates.

Day Trips and Nearby Attractions

Smithfield Uncovered: Exploring the Heart of Virginia

Along the Pagan River in the heart of Virginia’s historic Hampton Roads region, the charming small town of Smithfield, Virginia offers visitors a relaxed pace and an abundance of opportunities to immerse themselves in local culture. Smithfield, Virginia, and a trip through Isle of Wight County makes for a wonderful slow travel destination. A stroll down Main Street will transport you back in time, with its brick sidewalks, antique lampposts, and historic buildings dating back to the colonial era.

Natives go by a slower pace of life in Smithfield, Virginia. As a local, I describe Smithfield, Virginia to others as living in a Hallmark movie. People wave at each other and businesses know locals by name. We proudly decorate our windows on Main St. and our town is full of nostalgia. Smithfield is rich in history and cultural heritage with many different places to explore.

Visitors can pop into the locally-owned shops and galleries lining the street, chat with friendly shopkeepers, and find unique handmade crafts and artworks. No chain stores or fast food joints are found here in Downtown- just authentic mom-and-pop businesses. Smithfield, Virginia has so much to offer to someone planning a vacation to Virginia or a Virginia Stay-Cation.

Smithfield is home to a variety of historical attractions, cultural events, and outdoor activities. Visitors can explore the historic downtown, and visit the Isle of Wight County Museum where they can learn about local history and shop a variety of small businesses. On certain days visitors can experience the Smithfield Farmer’s Market or enjoy a variety of festivals and events.

Smithfield is perfect to use as a base camp for exploring Virginia with proximity to other popular locations like Colonial Williamsburg, Busch Gardens, Jamestown, Yorktown, or Virginia Beach. If you’re already planning a stay in the historic triangle Smithfield is a quick (free) ferry ride across the James River from the Williamsburg/Jamestown area and perfect for a day trip.

Smithfield Ham

No visit to Smithfield (Hamtown) is complete without stopping to get a slice of world-famous ham at one of the restaurants along Main Street. The ham-producing Smithfield area of Virginia has a long and storied history, dating back to the 1770s. As early as 1779 the ham-making tradition began when Capt. Mallory Todd started exporting hams in Smithfield.

Since then, Smithfield has become one of the most well-known towns in Virginia for its production of world-famous country hams. In 1921, Smithfield Foods established what is now the largest pork processing plant in the world. Modern-day Smithfield Foods delivers products across six continents. If you choose you can walk to the Smithfield Foods Headquarters or drive by the packing plant on your visit, but neither offer tours inside.

The Isle of Wight County Museum is however home to a replica full-size smokehouse where visitors can learn more about the rich ham history of Smithfield. This ham-themed exhibit gives visitors the opportunity to smell ham spices and a better understanding of the ham-curing process.

At the center of town lies the Smithfield Historic District, a collection of homes and buildings that have stood for over 200 years. Here you’ll find the 1750s Court House along with other stately buildings and homes. Whether visiting Smithfield, Virginia for the first time or you are a native you should also, check out the Isle of Wight County Museum.

This museum showcases the history and cultural heritage of the area, including exhibits on Native American culture, the Civil War, and the agricultural industry. The museum is a great place to start your day learning about Smithfield and Isle of Wight County. Besides the replica smokehouse mentioned above the museum is home to Hammy the world’s oldest ham and the world’s oldest peanut.

The displays are always changing at the Isle of Wight County Museum, so if you have been in the past it is likely there is something new you haven’t seen. The museum is especially a good place to visit when it’s raining or cold outside and you need something fun to do (kids love it too). The staff is super friendly and knowledgeable and the museum also has the cutest themed Hamtown gift shop. You can find all sorts of cool souvenirs, gifts, or something to treasure if you’re a local.

St. Luke’s Church

Smithfield is also home to Virginia’s oldest church building and open cemetery, St. Luke’s Church. This is a true historical gem and you’ll only find it in Smithfield, Virginia (Hamtown). The oldest marked grave here dates back to 1767 and the history here touches the heart. St. Luke’s Church is the oldest surviving brick church in Virginia. Furthermore, it is one of the few remaining examples of 17th-century brick architecture in the country.

At St. Luke you can explore the history of the area, admire the architecture, and learn about its religious significance. The church was built in the 1700s and has served as a place of worship for centuries. The church is known for its rare 18th-century English box pews, which are some of the oldest in Virginia.

Visitors can appreciate the exterior features such as the brick bell tower and brick walkways, designed by Francis Cabell in 1887. To learn more about the history of the area you’re going to want to visit Windsor Castle Park. The park has several outbuildings that contain a plethora of information and history. These buildings include:
•Two 20th-century peanut barns
• 19th-century farm manager’s office, stables, a smokehouse, and barn
•, and 18th-century colonial kitchen/laundry.

When planning your trip to Smithfield you can reserve a space for your walking tour or more information about self-guided tours. Besides being full of history Windsor Castle Park is a beautiful area to take a walk or run, take your dog to the dog park, children to the playground, or rent a kayak and explore the Pagan River.

After all your exploring you will find there are many places to dine in Smithfield and savor the small-town moments. Be sure to check out all the small businesses and gift shops along Main St and take home some local peanuts or ham products. Several shops and restaurants have a country vibe to them and will remind you of being in an old general store. On a warm day, I suggest choosing to eat outside at one of the restaurants and enjoy the sights and sounds of Main Street.

Located moments from the beach the VB Atlantic Ave Condo at Oceans II Condos provides a convenient option for your Virginia Beach vacation. Renting here provided privacy, quiet, and relaxation allowing me to experience Virginia Beach like a local.

During my stay, I enjoyed stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean from the cozy comfort of my beachfront studio rental, tailored for those who adore the beach. I liked the benefit of a designated parking spot mere steps away from the shoreline and immersing myself in the sand and waves without the need to navigate busy streets.

As a work-from-anywhere nomad, I appreciated being able to connect with complimentary Wi-Fi and relax with Roku TV access throughout my stay. After a day of seaside bliss, taking a dip in the refreshing saltwater pool or unwinding on the lush lawn, just moments away from the beach was bliss.

I loved how this condo’s kitchen comes fully equipped too with all the culinary needs, from pots and pans to a K-cup coffee maker, microwave, electric range/oven, and refrigerator/freezer. Forget about packing linens, towels, beach towels, or beach chairs too because this host has you covered. The Queen bed was comfortable and I also appreciated the Cooling Hotel Quality Queen Size Pillows, and blackout shades to ensure a peaceful night’s rest.

In addition to the inviting studio, there were excellent amenities within the condo community too. There is a saltwater pool and the property is just moments from the beach visible outside the window. It was easy to unwind without straying far from my accommodations. This condo’s location makes it easy to access the city’s top attractions, including museums, shopping areas, and restaurants. Plus, with multiple public transit options nearby exploring the city is a breeze.

Whether traveling solo or as a couple seeking a romantic retreat, The Atlantic View Condo provides everything you need for an unforgettable beachfront stay. From stunning ocean vistas to thoughtful amenities and a well-equipped kitchen, your stay will be comfortable and hassle-free.

The hotel has a small gift shop that has some cute merchandise including bath products from the hotel, doggie treats, and other items. One of the cutest souvenirs from the Western Front Hotel is a ceramic rabbit made by a local artisan that holds cotton balls. The hotel has a complimentary coffee bar in the lobby and also will bring a Kureig to your room upon request. A complimentary, “kick start your day”, breakfast can be ordered from a card in the room and placed outside the door in a provided pail. The pail is returned the next morning with the food selections which include yogurt, homemade granola, fruit, and juice options.

Overall, whether you’re seeking outdoor adventure, cultural exploration, or simply a luxurious retreat in a charming Appalachian town, the Western Front Hotel offers an exceptional experience for all types of travelers. Cross off being able to take an ATV on historic trails and old logging roads winding through the mountains off your bucket list. The Western Front Hotel has the option to book ATV packages that include an ATV rental during your stay making the booking process easy. The convenience of having the ATV rental at the hotel was perfect. The Western Front Hotel provided trail maps and the staff was very helpful in answering any questions.

A short walk out the back door of the hotel, and guests can get in their ATV rental. From the hotel parking lot, it’s a quick drive up to the trails. In addition to ATV rentals, the hotel sells passes for the trail if you choose to bring your own ATV, UTV, quad, or dirt bike. The trails were well kept and were labeled by their level of difficulty as well as what type of ATV was allowed on them.

Some of the area trails allowed for Jeeps and 4×4 vehicles and other spots were only accessible by mountain bike or dirt bikes. My favorite spot was an overlook of the surrounding mountains. While on my adventure I saw deer and the trail was very peaceful and a great place to connect with nature.

Spanning hundreds of miles across Southwest Virginia, these ATV and mountain biking trails offer thrilling adventures for riders of all skill levels. Strap on your helmet, rev up your engine and prepare for an exhilarating journey through the rugged backcountry of Appalachia.

I enjoyed that I could eat at the hotel or walk from the Western Front Hotel to nearby food options.

The Fat Boys BBQ across the street from the Western Front Hotel, has the sweetest proprietors and they encourage everyone to try the Heart Attack which is a baked potato with cheese and butter topped with BBQ chicken. Locals like to add baked beans and even coleslaw on top of this creation. This restaurant also has plenty of other options and cooks all their BBQ in town.
