Myrtle Beach the Perfect Winter Vacation Getaway

myrtle beach the perfect winter vacation getaway

Sponsored|When most people picture Myrtle Beach, they envision sunny summer days, packed beaches, and long waits at popular restaurants. What if I told you that one of the best times to experience this coastal paradise is actually in the winter months? Myrtle Beach in the off-season offers a completely different vibe and a peaceful escape with fewer crowds and a slower pace. If you’re looking for a more relaxed getaway read on to find out why winter is the perfect time to visit.

Peaceful Beaches Without the Crowds

Myrtle Beach in winter offers an entirely different kind of coastal experience, one that’s perfect for those who long for a tranquil, unhurried escape. When you visit during the winter months, you’ll discover mild temperatures and that the shorelines once crowded with sun-seeking families and beachgoers are now spacious and peaceful. It’s a rare chance to experience the charm of this iconic destination without the usual hustle and bustle.

The beach feels like your own private paradise without the masses of tourists. Imagine walking along the shoreline and being able to spread out and enjoy the wide expanse of sand, free from the hustle of busy summer months. There’s no fighting for a spot, no jostling for space next to strangers, and no need to reserve your chair early in the morning to ensure a good view of the ocean. The calm, uncrowded atmosphere gives you the rare chance to savor the coast’s beauty without feeling rushed or cramped.

With fewer people around, the beach offers a kind of serenity that can be hard to find in more tourist-heavy seasons. You can take your time as you walk along the surf, listening to the rhythmic crashing of the waves as they meet the sand. Walk barefoot, collect seashells, or simply sit on the sand with a cup of coffee or tea and enjoy the quiet as you connect deeply with the natural beauty of the coastline. The sound of the waves, the feeling of the breeze, and the vastness of the ocean create a meditative environment, one where you can truly unwind and relax.

For those who enjoy photography, winter at Myrtle Beach offers ideal conditions to capture the coast’s beauty without the distractions of summer crowds. The soft light of winter mornings and evenings casts a golden glow on the beach, making it a photographer’s dream. The solitude also provides the perfect backdrop for capturing stunning images of the pier, the waves, or even the occasional seagull gliding through the sky. Another perk is the lack of beach equipment cluttering the sands. In summer, the beaches can be filled with rows of umbrellas, beach chairs, and towels which can make it hard to find a quiet spot. But in winter, the beaches are much more minimalist just the open stretch of sand and the sea. If you’re someone who enjoys simply breathing in the fresh air and watching the waves roll in, this unspoiled environment provides the perfect setting for reflection or simply soaking in the natural surroundings.

Even the local piers which are very popular spots during the summer months, become a peaceful retreat in the off-season. You can walk out over the ocean, taking in the vastness of the Atlantic without the typical crowds and distractions. The quieter pier offers a unique opportunity to observe the coastline from a different perspective, perhaps even spot a few fishermen casting their lines or taking in the distant view of the ocean stretching into the horizon.

The spaciousness of the beach in winter makes it ideal for a leisurely experience, especially if you are an early riser looking for a quiet sunrise or someone who enjoys long, peaceful afternoon walks. The absence of tourists means you can embrace the beach at your own pace without having to worry about noisy crowds or the rush of the summer tourist season. It’s the perfect time to reconnect with the beauty of the coast and simply be present in the moment, with nothing but the sound of the waves and the call of seagulls to accompany you.

No More Waiting in Line for Food

The pizza at Coast Pizza never disappoints and there is always some left for later! Tip: Try a pickle pizza it is amazing.

One of the best reasons to visit Myrtle Beach in the winter is the absence of crowds at local restaurants. During peak travel seasons, it’s common to face long waits of over an hour just to get a table at your favorite dining spot. However, in the off-season, you can simply walk into nearly any restaurant without the usual hassle. From a casual bite at a cozy beachside diner to an elegant seafood dinner at a high-end restaurant, there’s no need to make reservations days in advance or rush through your meal to make room for others.

This quieter time allows you to truly relax and enjoy your meal at a more leisurely pace, indulging in freshly caught seafood or savoring a laid-back dish at a local cafe. Additionally, with fewer tourists around, many eateries offer special off-season promotions, so dining out becomes more affordable, making it a great time to enjoy a fantastic meal without breaking the bank.

Seasonal Events and Activities to Enjoy

Beyond the usual beach activities, winter in Myrtle Beach brings its own set of attractions and events that you won’t want to miss. The local gardens light up with dazzling holiday displays, and special winter performances at the Carolina Opry entertain in a more intimate setting.

For families or anyone looking for a more relaxed experience, the Ripley’s Aquarium remains open year-round, giving you a peaceful way to explore the wonders of marine life without the crowds of summer visitors. If you are in town at the right time, the New Year’s Eve celebrations bring fireworks, live music, and a festive beach bonfire to ring in the new year.

The cooler months also make for perfect conditions to enjoy outdoor activities at a relaxed pace. Golfers can take advantage of lower green fees and fewer players on the course, and bike trails along the beach provide a peaceful way to explore the area. Fishing enthusiasts can enjoy quiet waters and a chance to catch local species, like trout or redfish, without the crowds of anglers that flood the coast in warmer months.

Affordable Accommodations

Pool and hot tubs are always less crowded during the off season in Myrtle Beach.

If you are hoping to save on accommodations, winter is the time to visit. Hotel prices drop significantly, and with fewer tourists around, you can snag a great deal on oceanfront resorts or cozy vacation rentals. Stay in a luxurious beachfront hotel or rent a quiet cottage either way your dollar will go further during the off-season. Many hotels offer heated indoor pools or hot tubs so you can still enjoy some water fun too despite the cooler temperatures.

A Slower, More Relaxed Pace

One of the most delightful things about visiting Myrtle Beach in winter is the slower pace of life. With fewer tourists, the atmosphere feels more laid-back. There’s no need to rush—whether you’re enjoying a leisurely breakfast at a local cafe or browsing art galleries and shops along the boardwalk. The quieter streets and relaxed ambiance make it easier to unwind, making it the perfect place to escape the stress of everyday life.

Myrtle Beach in winter is a rare opportunity to experience the coastal beauty that many miss during the busy summer months. With fewer people, more space, and an environment that encourages peace and relaxation, it becomes the perfect destination for those looking to truly unwind and enjoy the natural surroundings. Whether you’re looking for a solitary walk, a peaceful place to read, or simply a serene spot to enjoy the view, Myrtle Beach in winter provides an unforgettable, quieter beach experience that’s hard to beat.

If you’ve always wanted to experience the charm of this coastal destination without the summer hustle and bustle, now is the perfect time to plan your winter retreat to Myrtle Beach. You’ll leave feeling rejuvenated and ready to return next season.

As I rounded the final bend, the enchanting sight of the Tides Inn appeared, situated on the edge of Carter’s Creek. Getting out of the car I found the air was fresh with a hint of saltwater, and I could feel the stress of everyday life start to melt away. Looking out the glass doors of the lobby at the marina the buildings seemed to float effortlessly on the water, their reflections dancing gently in the ripples. It was a scene so serene, it felt like stepping into a postcard and a perfect blend of coastal charm and peaceful solitude.

Outside, I took strolls along the water’s edge, where the soothing sounds of nature and the gentle sway of boats created a tranquil atmosphere. The scenic surroundings, combined with the rhythmic lapping of the water, provided the ideal backdrop for reflection and relaxation. From enjoying the views out my window or taking in the fresh air along the shore, it truly felt like the perfect setting for a restful retreat.

One of the highlights of the restaurant is the Bay View Dining Room, where guests can enjoy a meal while taking in breathtaking views of the creek and marina. The atmosphere is both relaxed and elegant, making it perfect for everything from casual brunches to special celebrations. For seafood lovers, The Tides Inn excels in showcasing the bounty of the Chesapeake Bay. Start with the local oysters, served fresh and perfectly complemented by a selection of locally sourced condiments.

The restaurant also has a trendy bar the View Room where you can sip on craft cocktails and enjoy fresh oysters or order off the restaurant’s menu. While I was visiting the bar’s lounge area had been taken over by Moët and encouraged guests to cheers to life’s finest moments. The Moët Lounge offered a special menu as well with caviar-topped oysters, brochette, and of course bottles and glasses of Moët & Chandon. The experience feels as exclusive as it is delightful.

For a casual dining experience check out Fish Hawk (when in season). The atmosphere is effortlessly elegant, seamlessly blending the serene waterfront setting with a touch of refined luxury. The restaurant celebrated for its fresh seafood and breathtaking views, offered an inviting ambiance a perfect place to relax and enjoy a leisurely lunch by the water.

Seated at tables with sweeping views of the shimmering bay, guests are treated to a menu crafted with the freshest local ingredients. Each dish is a vibrant celebration of Virginia’s coastal flavors, while the soft lapping of the waves offers a tranquil soundtrack to the meal.

The Activities: A Blend of Adventure and Relaxation at the Tides Inn

If you prefer to unwind while on vacation, the following onsite spa provides a range of treatments designed to rejuvenate both body and mind. After a relaxing massage or facial, you can enjoy the peaceful surroundings while sipping tea in the lounge area or go take a dip in the (seasonal) outdoor pool.

While the tranquil environment encourages relaxation, the Tides Inn also offers plenty of activities for those seeking adventure. Spend a day kayaking or paddleboarding on the calm waters of Carter’s Creek, play some pickleball or go golfing, learn to craft something unique to take home in the Makers Space, or take a tour. The Makers Space

the Virginia high Pearl and Teresa, the head instructor at the maker space at the Tides Inn

One of the highlights of my stay was learning to make a wreath at the Maker’s Space. The experience was so enjoyable and rewarding! Theresa, my instructor, was incredibly patient and knowledgeable, guiding me step by step through the process. She took the time to explain each technique and shared tips on how to make the wreath truly unique.

What made the experience even more special was Theresa’s thoughtful approach to sourcing materials. She collects beautiful items from around the inn, such as natural elements, ribbons, and seasonal decorations, all of which add a personal touch to the wreaths. It was wonderful to create something with my own hands, using these carefully chosen items.

The wreath turned out to be the perfect souvenir, a beautiful reminder of my time at the inn. It was not just a craft; it was a keepsake of the experience, something I could take home and cherish. I left with not only a gorgeous wreath but also a sense of accomplishment and a new skill I can enjoy in the future.

Ecology And Horticulture :Oyster, Fire, & Cheer Experience

During my stay, I was also able to contribute to the oyster shell reef restoration project. This was an unforgettable outdoor adventure led by the Tides Inn’s ecologist, Capt. Smiley! The experience included embarking on a hands-on workshop to learn about the famous mollusk residents the oysters and the exciting shoreline restoration project at the Tides Inn.

It felt incredibly meaningful to play a small part in such an important environmental effort. It was exciting to help place oyster shells in designated areas along the creek, working to restore the natural habitat for these vital creatures. The experience was both humbling and rewarding, knowing that the effort put in would contribute to the health of the local ecosystem and help support the restoration of the reef.

Afterward, I had the unique pleasure of enjoying fresh oysters on Carter’s Creek, just steps away from where we’d just worked on the reef. The oysters, freshly harvested, were nothing short of incredibly briny, sweet, and perfectly fresh. Sitting by the water, savoring these local delicacies, felt like the perfect culmination of the day. It was a rare opportunity to connect directly with nature and the environment in such a meaningful way, and I will always remember the sense of fulfillment in both giving back to the land and enjoying its bounty.

Camping with Mom for Her Birthday: A Perfect Celebration in Nature at Virginia State Parks

When it comes to celebrating birthdays, the typical gifts of flowers, cards, and dinner out are nice, but they don’t always offer the kind of connection and memories that last a lifetime. If you’re looking for something unique and meaningful, consider spending your mom’s birthday in the great outdoors. A camping trip at a Virginia State park can be the perfect way to celebrate her special day, create lasting memories, and experience nature in a whole new way.

Chippokes State Park in Surry, Virginia
Chippokes State Park in Surry, Virginia

Why Camping at a Virginia State Park Makes the Perfect Birthday Gift

I planned to spend my mom’s birthday camping at a Virginia State park because it offers several benefits. Camping is a chance to slow down, disconnect from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, and focus entirely on each other. There’s something magical about the simplicity of nature that allows you to fully engage in the present moment.

A camping trip doesn’t have to be extravagant or expensive because it’s all about the experience and quality time spent together. Whether your mom loves hiking, stargazing, fishing, or simply sitting around a campfire, the possibilities for making her birthday extra special are endless. Here are a few ideas to help you plan the perfect camping getaway for your mom’s birthday.

Choose the Right Park

I chose Chippokes State Park in Surry, Virginia for our destination because this park is located on the James River and has something for everyone. Hikers, bikers, beach enthusiasts, equestrian trail riders, fossil/shark teeth hunters, camping, history, and natural beauty lovers alike can find something they will enjoy at Chippokes State Park. There are so many options available at Virginia State Parks and I know you can find a park that fits perfectly for your trip too.

Camping at Chippokes

On the grounds of Chippokes State Park is a well-laid-out campground with tent and RV-style sites. The campground is laid out in a traditional loop style consisting of two loops. If you’re interested in spending the night you can rent a yurt or bring your RV, camper, or tent. Chippokes also has cabins for rent on the property.

Walnut Valley House at Chippokes State Park
Walnut Valley House at Chippokes State Park available for nightly rentals.

In the campground, there is a bathhouse with showers and restroom facilities. The campground has a dump station, laundry, firewood, and an amphitheater where welcoming campfires take place. Group sites are available as well to rent.

The sites are mostly wooded and it was a very quiet area when I camped. Each site had a trash pole, firepit, and picnic table as well as ample room to set up a tent or park an RV. The site I rented also, had a nice elevated gravel area for tent camping or sitting.

Plan Her Favorite Activities

Once the location is chosen, think about what your mom enjoys doing outdoors. Does she love fishing, birdwatching, or maybe reading by the campfire? Plan activities that she’ll love from an early morning walk, to an afternoon picnic, or a quiet evening of stargazing.

If she’s a foodie, you can elevate the typical campfire meals with a little creativity. Pack her favorite snacks or try cooking a special birthday meal over the fire. Make the experience even more memorable by baking a birthday cake or dessert in a Dutch oven, or bring along a portable grill for a delicious birthday BBQ.

My mom is into history so I knew she would enjoy the rich early American history Chippokes has. Did you know the name Chippokes is said to have come from the Algonquian Chief, Choapoke who had befriended the settlers? I also find it fascinating that the first records indicate the plantation area was once owned by Capt. William Powell came to the area on the third resupply ship to Jamestown in 1609. This park is very unique in history and location.

Create a Thoughtful Atmosphere

The key to a memorable birthday is making it feel special. You don’t need a lot of frills or decorations, but small touches can go a long way. Pack a birthday banner, string lights for the campsite, or her favorite music for background ambiance. You could also bring along some candles to light up the campfire and set the mood.

A personalized touch, like writing a heartfelt card or sharing a letter of appreciation, can be a meaningful addition to the celebration. Take the time to tell your mom how much she means to you, and let her know how much you appreciate her, especially as you’re creating these memories together in nature.

Give Her Space to Relax

Camping isn’t just about adventure it’s also about relaxation. After all, it’s her special day! Set aside time for her to relax and unwind. You could even bring along her favorite book for some quiet reading time.

If your mom loves a little pampering, consider a DIY spa experience at the campsite. Bring some essential oils, and a simple face mask, or even make a foot scrub using ingredients like sugar and coconut oil. This can turn the camping trip into not only an adventure but also a rejuvenating retreat for her.

Capture the Moments

One of the best parts of camping is the opportunity to disconnect from digital distractions and reconnect with nature and each other. But that doesn’t mean you should forget to capture the memories. Take photos throughout the trip like snapping candid shots by the campfire, on a hike, or while enjoying a peaceful moment together by the lake. Don’t worry about the makeup or your hair you’re in the great outdoors!

You could even create a small scrapbook or photo album after the trip, with the pictures, mementos, and notes from your camping adventure. This will allow both you and your mom to look back on the experience for years to come.

During the tour trip take a moment to reflect on all the wonderful things your mom has done for you and the special moments you’ve shared over the years. As you sit around the campfire or watch the stars, express your gratitude for her love and guidance. A birthday camping trip can be the perfect opportunity to bond, reminisce, and build even deeper connections.

Things to do a Chippokes

Chippokes State Park in Surry, Virginia
Trails at Chippokes State Park

The visitors center should be a first stop and has a plethora of information about ongoing programs at the park, trail maps, and information about the local area. Park Packs are available as well for checkout from the Visitors Center to explore the park.

Taking a fossil walk with a Park Interpreter or finding shark teeth on the beach (that you can keep) is a unique opportunity at Chippokes State Park that visitors should take advantage of when visiting. For horse lovers, the park has marked equestrian areas for trailer parking and trail ride exploration. In addition to these activities picnicking areas that include rentable shelters with grills and drinking water is an option for visitors who want to relax and enjoy nature.

Farm and Forestry Museum

Chippokes State Park in Surry, Virginia
Chippokes was once home to fruit orchards and my guide Joel, explained that this was once the site of one of Virginia’s few legal distilleries.

My mom’s family background is farming and I knew she would enjoy that Chippokes State Park is one of the oldest continuously farmed properties in the country. The Farm and Forestry museum on the property is also an antique lover’s dream containing a variety of over 600 antiques on display in a self-guided museum setting. The museum admission is included in your park fee and well worth the visit to Chippokes State Park itself.

The area across from the Farm and Forestry Museum has several live farm animals to view and a working cultural garden area. During certain times there are programs that include teaching about the livestock and animals on the farm. Visitors should check the Chippokes monthly calendar before their visit to see the list of current Interpretive Programs.

Jones-Stewart Mansion and the River House

Tour of the Mansion, grounds and gardens of Chippokes Plantation

Chippokes State Park is also home to two historic houses. The River House Circa 1830 was occupied initially by owner Albert Carroll Jones. The second house known as the Mansion House was constructed by Jones in 1852, along with the accompanying brick kitchen. This stately structure was even built using materials from the property.

At the time of Jones’ ownership Chippokes was the home of fruit orchards and my guide Joel, explained that this was once the site of one of Virginia’s few legal distilleries. People even claim this plantation survived the Civil War because Jones sold brandy to both sides during the war.

The River House is only viewable from the outside at this time and is in the process of being restored. The Mansion House, however, is available for interior and exterior tours as part of the park admission (make sure to check for times of operation). Victor and Evelyn Stewart were the last owners of the property and donated Chippokes to the Commonwealth of Virginia in 1967 with the purpose of it being used as a park. The Stewarts are buried on the property as well in the Paradise Gardens.

A Birthday to Remember

Ultimately, camping for your mom’s birthday isn’t just about the outdoors; it’s about the time spent together, away from the distractions of daily life. Whether you’re hiking to a scenic overlook, cooking a meal over the fire, or simply enjoying a quiet evening under the stars, the experience of celebrating her birthday in nature will create memories that last long after the trip is over.

Bathhouse at Chippokes State Park Surry, Virginia

Chippokes State Park has a lot to offer from fossil/ shark tooth hunting, picnicking, beautiful beaches, and history you’re bound to find something for everyone to enjoy at Chippokes. The park is very peaceful and even when the campground is fully occupied the spots are roomy enough to still feel connected to nature. If you’re looking for a way to celebrate your mom in a way that’s unique and unforgettable, pack your gear, head to a Virginia State Park, and make her birthday truly special.

Things to note if you’re interested in camping at Chippokes:

•the bathhouse is a little dated, but it was always very clean and well maintained during my stay

•the park is rustic and isn’t a KOA or privately owned campground

•campsites fees included 6 people and 2 vehicles

•the campground allows pets if registered prior and this campground does not allow generator use.

•from the campground it is a quick free (car) ferry ride across the James River to Jamestown, Colonial Williamsburg, Busch Gardens and Yorktown.

•I would recommend coming with a cooler or refrigerator of food if you’re planning to stay put as there aren’t many places close by for grocery or food service.

Ghost Hunting at the Welty House in Gettysburg

welty house gettysburg Pennsylvania

To continue the day I embarked on an unforgettable ghost-hunting adventure in the basement of the historic Welty House in Gettysburg, PA. Known for its rich Civil War history and ghostly legends, the Welty House is intriguing. As I descended into the basement, a chill crept through the air. The atmosphere was thick with anticipation and the basement felt alive.

We set up our equipment, including a Phasma Box, which has gained popularity for its ability to communicate with spirits through audio manipulation. Once everything was ready, we began our session. The first few minutes were filled with static and silence, but then, quite unexpectedly, the device crackled to life. A clear voice resonated from the speaker, and my heart raced as I heard it say my name. “Krystle!?” I could hardly believe it. The sensation of being acknowledged by something perhaps beyond our world sent chills down my spine.

The experience was surreal. The Phasma Box responded intermittently through the investigation with numbers and words perhaps revealing possible glimpses of the past and the spirits that lingered in the house. While I didn’t see any apparitions the energy in the basement was palpable. It was as if the walls held memories of those who had walked there before. Being inside the house felt like a direct connection, a reminder that history is never truly forgotten. The moment my name was called will stay with me forever.

Ghost hunting at the Welty House was more than just a thrill; it was a deep dive into history and the mysteries that surround us. If you ever find yourself in Gettysburg, I highly recommend taking the plunge into the unknown. You never know who (or what) might be waiting to say hello.
