Gettysburg, Pennsylvania : A Cozy 24-Hour Adventure

Gettysburg has always held a special place in my heart, a charming corner of Pennsylvania where history and natural beauty come together. I’ve been visiting here for over thirty years and each visit unfurls a new layer of joy, and this short fall trip was no different.

Upon arrival I kicked off my adventure by heading straight to the Gettysburg National Military Park. The autumn leaves painted the landscape in hues of gold and crimson, making the battlefield’s somber history feel almost magical.

For those who haven’t experienced the area before, I highly recommend taking the self guided audio tour from your car or a bus tour of the battlefield. It allows you to immerse yourself in the stories of bravery while enjoying the gorgeous scenery. I know my way around here and as the sun peeked through the trees and wind in my face I felt a deep connection to this ground return.

Refueling at the Lincoln Diner and Strolling Downtown

After soaking in the breathtaking views and historical narrative, it was time to refuel. I made my way to the Lincoln Diner, a local favorite that never disappoints. The cozy atmosphere and friendly staff set the perfect vibe. I savored their famous chili each bite warm, hearty and rich with deliciousness paired with a gooey grilled cheese sandwich. The desserts here are homemade so make sure to save room!

Post-lunch, I wandered the streets of downtown Gettysburg. The charm of the quaint shops, many adorned with seasonal decorations, made this stroll a real joy. I popped into a few unique boutiques and handmade craft stores, uncovering little treasures that perfectly captured the spirit of the season. The energy of the town is always so lively and welcoming, each shopkeeper eager to share stories about their goods and the town’s history.

A Cozy Retreat at the 1863 Inn of Gettysburg

After an afternoon filled with exploration, I made my way to the 1863 Inn of Gettysburg, my home for the night. This enchanting inn, steeped in history, radiates warmth and charm, making it a delightful retreat that feels like stepping back in time. As I entered, the friendly staff welcomed me with genuine hospitality, setting the tone for a relaxing stay. The rooms here are modest, clean and comfortable. And the inn has all the necessary amenities one would need for a comfortable stay.

One of the standout features that makes me return to the 1863 Inn of Gettysburg, is its prime location. Situated within walking distance of downtown Gettysburg, it offers easy access to numerous restaurants, shops, and historic sites. Strolling through the streets, one is surrounded by a vibrant mix of history, culture, and local flavor. The inn’s setting allows guests to explore everything this charming town has to offer, making it ideal for both relaxation and adventure.

Sunset Views from the Observation Tower

Before the sun began its descent, I left the Inn and got in the car to make my way to the Battlefield Observation Tower. Standing tall and proud, it offers one of the best panoramic views of the battlefield and surrounding countryside. The climb to the top is well worth it, especially as the skies transformed into a vibrant canvas of orange, pink, and purple, painting a breathtaking backdrop for this historic landscape.

As I stood at the top, the cool breeze freshened my spirit, carrying with it a sense of serenity that only nature can provide. I took a quiet moment to reflect on the significance of the area, recognizing the echoes of history around me while also appreciating the beauty of the present. The sprawling fields below turned golden in the fading light, and I felt a profound connection to both the past and the beauty of autumn.

As dusk settled in, casting a magical glow over the landscape, I headed back down the tower steps, my heart full of gratitude for the experience. With the stunning sunset still vivid in my mind, I drove to the restaurant, eager to savor a delightful meal after such a serene and picturesque end to the day. My time at the observation tower was the perfect prelude to dinner at the Dobbin House Tavern.

The Dobbin House Tavern: A Culinary Gem

No visit to Gettysburg would be complete without a meal at the Dobbin House Tavern. This historic restaurant is within a beautifully restored 1776 home and exudes a charm that is simply unparalleled. As soon as you step through the door, the atmosphere wraps around you like a warm embrace, with flickering candlelight casting a soft glow on the rustic beams and original stonework, immersing you in a rich tapestry of history.

On this particular evening, I decided to indulge in their exquisite Adam’s County Duck. Each bite was a revelation of perfectly seasoned, juicy meat accompanied by a delightful array of sides and fresh breadbasket that complemented the dish beautifully. The chef here truly knows how to highlight local flavors, making every meal feel like a celebration of Gettysburg’s culinary heritage.

The attentive service added to the magic of the evening, with the staff sharing anecdotes about the tavern’s storied past and its significance during the Civil War. Dining at the Dobbin House isn’t just about the food; it’s about the whole experience. The history that seeps from the walls, the warmth of the environment, and the richness of sharing a meal in such a legendary setting is unmatched. History buffs or those simply seeking a cozy spot to enjoy a meal, both will find the Dobbin House Tavern a must-visit that ensures your time in Gettysburg is truly special.

As the day drew to a close, I felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude for my time in Gettysburg and the combination of history and comfort it provides. The next morning, I woke up refreshed and ready to embrace the day ahead. After savoring a delicious breakfast at the inn, featuring homemade pastries, I packed my bags and checked out. With my belly full and my spirits high, I hit the road to my next travel destination, carrying with me the memories of Gettysburg’s beauty and the warmth of the inn’s hospitality. Some of the choices when I visited in the Superior Dining Car were appetizers of shrimp cocktails and savory beef Wellington puff pastries, along with fresh salads and delectable entrees, including Chilean sea bass with lemon and garlic butter. Desserts ranged from indulgent chocolate torte to refreshing lemon mascarpone cake.

Things to do in Cherokee, Maggie Valley, Gatlinburg and the Smokey Mountains

Things to do in Cherokee, North Carolina

The Oconaluftee River in Cherokee is a beautiful area to visit and if you’re ever near the Smokies I suggest checking it out. The Oconaluftee area and trails have plenty of places to float/raft, fish, and play. The river here is a place where many families gather, especially the Oconoluftee Island Park. In the evenings or on the weekends many people can be seen playing in the water and enjoying family time together.

When I visit family we like to go to Oconaluftee Island and listen to stories from elders over a bonfire. Fun fact: Cherokee don’t have typical powwow-type dances like you may have seen from other tribes or on TV, but instead hold stomps. Bonfire times and other special events can be found on the Visit Cherokee website.

Museum of the Cherokee

The Museum of the Cherokee is a great place to visit while in Cherokee and gives a better understanding of the tribe and it’s history.

If you’re looking to see Native American artifacts and learn more about the history of the Cherokee tribe I highly suggest checking out the Museum of the Cherokee. The layout of the museum is great and the exhibits are very interactive. The collection of Native American artifacts is impressive. The museum is also, within walking distance to many shops and food options.

Indian Village-Cherokee, North Carolina

There are many things to see and do in and around Cherokee, Nc. The peace and tranquillity of the Indian village alone is worth the drive.

If you’re looking to see the heart of the Cherokee people I would also suggest visiting the Indian village. The village isn’t far up the mountain from the museum and has tours daily with Native American guides that explain the culture, history, and way of life. The village also has a walking trail and gardens to explore.

The internal flame is worth a walk down to the theater where the Unto these Hills takes place, but I highly recommend getting tickets to watch the performance too in Cherokee, North Carolina.

Combined tickets can be purchased that include multiple attractions such as the Unto the Hills drama. The theatrical interpretation of the journey of the Cherokee people is a must-see. The internal flame in front of the theater is worth a walk down to the theater and I highly recommend getting tickets to watch the performance.

Visiting the Great Smoky Mountain’s National Park

The Great Smoky Mountain National park offers plenty to enjoy and some one of a kind photo opportunities and hiking experiences.

If you’re into hiking Cherokee has many beautiful trails. The Great Smoky Mountain National Park is also a close drive from Cherokee and offers a plethora of trails and photo opportunities. Hiking part of the Appalachian trail is an unbeatable experience.

Things to do in Gatlinburg, Tennessee

As you drive from Cherokee, NC to the Great Smoky Mountain National Park you will also, be close to Gatlinburg, Tennessee. From where I was staying in Cherokee it was only 37 miles to Gatlinburg. If you’re not familiar this area along with Pigeon Forge is a known tourist hotspot. It is a vacation destination in itself and has everything you can imagine in terms of entertainment, restaurants, and shopping. During this trip, I didn’t spend much time in Gatlinburg, but I have been there several times with family.

Skylift Park in Gatlinburg, Tennessee offers amazing views, plenty of chairs to sit, gift shop, concessios and areas to capture the perfect photos.

Skylift Park-Gatlinburg, Tennessee

One evening of the trip was dedicated to Gatlinburg. While there I wanted to revisit one of my favorite attractions and ride on the Skylift. This ride is a Gatlinburg icon and I remember riding on it as a child. I was excited to be able to finally check out the new partial glass bridge this trip as well. Tip: The Skylift Park allows multiple visits in a day with paid admission and it is the perfect spot to catch the sunset.

While at the Skylift park, a storm came up and we stayed put there for a couple of hours. There is a gift shop, concession-style restaurant, and bar on top of the mountain. Along with the beautiful views, there are plenty of chairs to sit on and areas to capture the perfect photos. We decided to enjoy lunch there too and had pizza and beer with the mountain views. The concession area had fresh food and the bar staff were very friendly.

Sugarlands Distillery- Gatlinburg, Tennessee

One of the other activities I decided to do while in Gatlinburg was to visit Sugarlands. I enjoy a good drink and have heard so many positive things about this distillery. I am not a stranger to moonshine and grew up with a family that proudly made their shine.

Watching programs like Moonshiners on the History Channel piqued my interest in this topic as an adult. I was excited to be in Gatlinburg and to finally get to check out Sugarlands for myself. Tasting tours are available for $5 and I tried 12 tiny samples of different varieties of their moonshine, plus a cream liqueur. Honestly, it was all amazing!

The bar inside Sugarlands in Gatlinburg, Tennessee didn’t disappoint and their drinks were made with lots of shine and sass.

Sugarlands also has a huge gift shop and after our tasting, we purchased several types of shine to take home. The $5 tasting fee is knocked off a shine purchase too which was nice. There were several deals for a percent off certain items and a free item after 5 when we visited. We also enjoyed some fun cocktails and live music in their bar behind the gift shop. Sugarlands was a great way to spend our evening in Gatlinburg and a fun way to experience something different.

There is so much to do and see in this area of the Smoky Mountains from Cherokee, Maggie Valley, and Gatlinburg to Pigeon Forge anyone could make a multi-week vacation out of it. There is something to appeal to everyone in the family too from history, water activities, food/drink, and the outdoor lifestyle. I know I can’t wait to plan another trip back to the area.
