Camping with Mom for Her Birthday: A Perfect Celebration in Nature at Virginia State Parks

When it comes to celebrating birthdays, the typical gifts of flowers, cards, and dinner out are nice, but they don’t always offer the kind of connection and memories that last a lifetime. If you’re looking for something unique and meaningful, consider spending your mom’s birthday in the great outdoors. A camping trip at a Virginia State park can be the perfect way to celebrate her special day, create lasting memories, and experience nature in a whole new way.

Chippokes State Park in Surry, Virginia
Chippokes State Park in Surry, Virginia

Why Camping at a Virginia State Park Makes the Perfect Birthday Gift

I planned to spend my mom’s birthday camping at a Virginia State park because it offers several benefits. Camping is a chance to slow down, disconnect from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, and focus entirely on each other. There’s something magical about the simplicity of nature that allows you to fully engage in the present moment.

A camping trip doesn’t have to be extravagant or expensive because it’s all about the experience and quality time spent together. Whether your mom loves hiking, stargazing, fishing, or simply sitting around a campfire, the possibilities for making her birthday extra special are endless. Here are a few ideas to help you plan the perfect camping getaway for your mom’s birthday.

Choose the Right Park

I chose Chippokes State Park in Surry, Virginia for our destination because this park is located on the James River and has something for everyone. Hikers, bikers, beach enthusiasts, equestrian trail riders, fossil/shark teeth hunters, camping, history, and natural beauty lovers alike can find something they will enjoy at Chippokes State Park. There are so many options available at Virginia State Parks and I know you can find a park that fits perfectly for your trip too.

Camping at Chippokes

On the grounds of Chippokes State Park is a well-laid-out campground with tent and RV-style sites. The campground is laid out in a traditional loop style consisting of two loops. If you’re interested in spending the night you can rent a yurt or bring your RV, camper, or tent. Chippokes also has cabins for rent on the property.

Walnut Valley House at Chippokes State Park
Walnut Valley House at Chippokes State Park available for nightly rentals.

In the campground, there is a bathhouse with showers and restroom facilities. The campground has a dump station, laundry, firewood, and an amphitheater where welcoming campfires take place. Group sites are available as well to rent.

The sites are mostly wooded and it was a very quiet area when I camped. Each site had a trash pole, firepit, and picnic table as well as ample room to set up a tent or park an RV. The site I rented also, had a nice elevated gravel area for tent camping or sitting.

Plan Her Favorite Activities

Once the location is chosen, think about what your mom enjoys doing outdoors. Does she love fishing, birdwatching, or maybe reading by the campfire? Plan activities that she’ll love from an early morning walk, to an afternoon picnic, or a quiet evening of stargazing.

If she’s a foodie, you can elevate the typical campfire meals with a little creativity. Pack her favorite snacks or try cooking a special birthday meal over the fire. Make the experience even more memorable by baking a birthday cake or dessert in a Dutch oven, or bring along a portable grill for a delicious birthday BBQ.

My mom is into history so I knew she would enjoy the rich early American history Chippokes has. Did you know the name Chippokes is said to have come from the Algonquian Chief, Choapoke who had befriended the settlers? I also find it fascinating that the first records indicate the plantation area was once owned by Capt. William Powell came to the area on the third resupply ship to Jamestown in 1609. This park is very unique in history and location.

Create a Thoughtful Atmosphere

The key to a memorable birthday is making it feel special. You don’t need a lot of frills or decorations, but small touches can go a long way. Pack a birthday banner, string lights for the campsite, or her favorite music for background ambiance. You could also bring along some candles to light up the campfire and set the mood.

A personalized touch, like writing a heartfelt card or sharing a letter of appreciation, can be a meaningful addition to the celebration. Take the time to tell your mom how much she means to you, and let her know how much you appreciate her, especially as you’re creating these memories together in nature.

Give Her Space to Relax

Camping isn’t just about adventure it’s also about relaxation. After all, it’s her special day! Set aside time for her to relax and unwind. You could even bring along her favorite book for some quiet reading time.

If your mom loves a little pampering, consider a DIY spa experience at the campsite. Bring some essential oils, and a simple face mask, or even make a foot scrub using ingredients like sugar and coconut oil. This can turn the camping trip into not only an adventure but also a rejuvenating retreat for her.

Capture the Moments

One of the best parts of camping is the opportunity to disconnect from digital distractions and reconnect with nature and each other. But that doesn’t mean you should forget to capture the memories. Take photos throughout the trip like snapping candid shots by the campfire, on a hike, or while enjoying a peaceful moment together by the lake. Don’t worry about the makeup or your hair you’re in the great outdoors!

You could even create a small scrapbook or photo album after the trip, with the pictures, mementos, and notes from your camping adventure. This will allow both you and your mom to look back on the experience for years to come.

During the tour trip take a moment to reflect on all the wonderful things your mom has done for you and the special moments you’ve shared over the years. As you sit around the campfire or watch the stars, express your gratitude for her love and guidance. A birthday camping trip can be the perfect opportunity to bond, reminisce, and build even deeper connections.

Things to do a Chippokes

Chippokes State Park in Surry, Virginia
Trails at Chippokes State Park

The visitors center should be a first stop and has a plethora of information about ongoing programs at the park, trail maps, and information about the local area. Park Packs are available as well for checkout from the Visitors Center to explore the park.

Taking a fossil walk with a Park Interpreter or finding shark teeth on the beach (that you can keep) is a unique opportunity at Chippokes State Park that visitors should take advantage of when visiting. For horse lovers, the park has marked equestrian areas for trailer parking and trail ride exploration. In addition to these activities picnicking areas that include rentable shelters with grills and drinking water is an option for visitors who want to relax and enjoy nature.

Farm and Forestry Museum

Chippokes State Park in Surry, Virginia
Chippokes was once home to fruit orchards and my guide Joel, explained that this was once the site of one of Virginia’s few legal distilleries.

My mom’s family background is farming and I knew she would enjoy that Chippokes State Park is one of the oldest continuously farmed properties in the country. The Farm and Forestry museum on the property is also an antique lover’s dream containing a variety of over 600 antiques on display in a self-guided museum setting. The museum admission is included in your park fee and well worth the visit to Chippokes State Park itself.

The area across from the Farm and Forestry Museum has several live farm animals to view and a working cultural garden area. During certain times there are programs that include teaching about the livestock and animals on the farm. Visitors should check the Chippokes monthly calendar before their visit to see the list of current Interpretive Programs.

Jones-Stewart Mansion and the River House

Tour of the Mansion, grounds and gardens of Chippokes Plantation

Chippokes State Park is also home to two historic houses. The River House Circa 1830 was occupied initially by owner Albert Carroll Jones. The second house known as the Mansion House was constructed by Jones in 1852, along with the accompanying brick kitchen. This stately structure was even built using materials from the property.

At the time of Jones’ ownership Chippokes was the home of fruit orchards and my guide Joel, explained that this was once the site of one of Virginia’s few legal distilleries. People even claim this plantation survived the Civil War because Jones sold brandy to both sides during the war.

The River House is only viewable from the outside at this time and is in the process of being restored. The Mansion House, however, is available for interior and exterior tours as part of the park admission (make sure to check for times of operation). Victor and Evelyn Stewart were the last owners of the property and donated Chippokes to the Commonwealth of Virginia in 1967 with the purpose of it being used as a park. The Stewarts are buried on the property as well in the Paradise Gardens.

A Birthday to Remember

Ultimately, camping for your mom’s birthday isn’t just about the outdoors; it’s about the time spent together, away from the distractions of daily life. Whether you’re hiking to a scenic overlook, cooking a meal over the fire, or simply enjoying a quiet evening under the stars, the experience of celebrating her birthday in nature will create memories that last long after the trip is over.

Bathhouse at Chippokes State Park Surry, Virginia

Chippokes State Park has a lot to offer from fossil/ shark tooth hunting, picnicking, beautiful beaches, and history you’re bound to find something for everyone to enjoy at Chippokes. The park is very peaceful and even when the campground is fully occupied the spots are roomy enough to still feel connected to nature. If you’re looking for a way to celebrate your mom in a way that’s unique and unforgettable, pack your gear, head to a Virginia State Park, and make her birthday truly special.

Things to note if you’re interested in camping at Chippokes:

•the bathhouse is a little dated, but it was always very clean and well maintained during my stay

•the park is rustic and isn’t a KOA or privately owned campground

•campsites fees included 6 people and 2 vehicles

•the campground allows pets if registered prior and this campground does not allow generator use.

•from the campground it is a quick free (car) ferry ride across the James River to Jamestown, Colonial Williamsburg, Busch Gardens and Yorktown.

•I would recommend coming with a cooler or refrigerator of food if you’re planning to stay put as there aren’t many places close by for grocery or food service.

Ghost Hunting at the Welty House in Gettysburg

welty house gettysburg Pennsylvania

To continue the day I embarked on an unforgettable ghost-hunting adventure in the basement of the historic Welty House in Gettysburg, PA. Known for its rich Civil War history and ghostly legends, the Welty House is intriguing. As I descended into the basement, a chill crept through the air. The atmosphere was thick with anticipation and the basement felt alive.

We set up our equipment, including a Phasma Box, which has gained popularity for its ability to communicate with spirits through audio manipulation. Once everything was ready, we began our session. The first few minutes were filled with static and silence, but then, quite unexpectedly, the device crackled to life. A clear voice resonated from the speaker, and my heart raced as I heard it say my name. “Krystle!?” I could hardly believe it. The sensation of being acknowledged by something perhaps beyond our world sent chills down my spine.

welty house gettysburg Pennsylvania

The experience was surreal. The Phasma Box responded intermittently through the investigation with numbers and words perhaps revealing possible glimpses of the past and the spirits that lingered in the house. While I didn’t see any apparitions the energy in the basement was palpable. It was as if the walls held memories of those who had walked there before. Being inside the house felt like a direct connection, a reminder that history is never truly forgotten. The moment my name was called will stay with me forever.

Ghost hunting at the Welty House was more than just a thrill; it was a deep dive into history and the mysteries that surround us. If you ever find yourself in Gettysburg, I highly recommend taking the plunge into the unknown. You never know who (or what) might be waiting to say hello.

Exploring the Magic: Disney’s Fort Wilderness Campground

From the moment you enter Fort Wilderness, you’re transported into a world where lush forests, tranquil lakes, and rustic charm seamlessly blend with the whimsical spirit of Disney. As a travel blogger with a passion for exploring unique destinations, Disney’s Fort Wilderness Campground has always been a dream spot on my bucket list. Within the enchanting world of Disney World Resort, this campground promised a blend of magical charm and rustic adventure that intrigued me deeply.

From my first glimpse of photos showcasing quaint campsites nestled among towering pines to hearing tales of families bonding over campfires and Disney-themed adventures, Fort Wilderness seemed like the perfect fusion of nature’s tranquility and Disney’s whimsical spirit. My journey to Fort Wilderness began with meticulous planning and learning about the activities that awaited me beyond the theme park gates.

Armed with my camera, a notebook, and a heart full of anticipation, I embarked on a trip that promised to combine my love for outdoor exploration with the wonder of Disney magic. I used the app to mobile check-in and was assigned my campsite number 2025 online on the afternoon of my stay. This is a great feature and once assigned a number guests can head straight to their campsite.

Upon arriving at Fort Wilderness Campground, I went to the main entrance to pick up my rented golf cart and then drove to my campsite. The air was crisp with the scent of pine, and the sounds of laughter and excitement echoed through the campground. This is such a hidden gem within the world of Disney and a place where the wonders of nature and the magic of Disney come together in perfect harmony.

Driving to my loop I felt a sense of connection to nature and the promise of unforgettable experiences ahead. I had never tent camped and when I had the opportunity to tent camp at Fort Wilderness Campground I jumped at the chance. The prospect of spending a night under the stars, surrounded by the sights and sounds of nature, beckoned like a siren’s call.

Tent Camping at Fort Wilderness Campground

Once at my Fort Wilderness campsite, my heart raced with a mix of eagerness and uncertainty. Would I be able to set up the tent properly? What if I didn’t like it? These thoughts danced through my mind as I parked and unloaded my supplies. With determination and a helpful set of instructions, I began setting up my tent. The process was surprisingly straightforward and my Villey easy popup tent erected itself once out of the bag. I also unpacked a couple of chairs, pillows, blankets, a tarp for ground cover, an Intex Queen inflatable mattress, a cooler, a small fan, and a 10×10 canopy tent to cover the space since Florida is known for rain. With each addition to making camp, I grew more confident this would be a great experience.

I marveled at the simplicity and beauty of my temporary home. The rustling leaves above and the distant calls of birds added a soundtrack to my efforts. Finally, the tent stood as a proud, but small shelter amid nature’s grandeur. The forest seemed to embrace me with its cool, earthy scent. Sunlight filtered through the canopy, dappling the ground with patches of warmth.

The setup was quick and easy. When I was done I took the golf cart to the marina and got on the boat to the Magic Kingdom. Later when I returned and retreated to my tent, the night sounds of chirping crickets and the gentle rustling of leaves were a symphony that lulled me into a peaceful sleep. Waking with the sunrise, I unzipped the tent and greeted the day with renewed wonder. Dew glistened on blades of grass, and the air held a crisp freshness that invigorated me. I watched the forest come alive with morning light. The nearby bathhouse was clean and comfortable for my morning shower.

Heading to pick up my mobile breakfast order at Trail’s End I couldn’t help but feel excited about just completing my first tent camping adventure. Reflecting on my first tent camping experience, I realized this had been more than just a night in nature. It was a journey of self-discovery, filled with moments of challenge, tranquility, and sheer joy. Even if I was in the safety of Disney I had conquered uncertainties, embraced the simplicity of outdoor living, and forged a deeper connection with the natural world.

A Blend of Nature and Disney Magic

From seasoned campers to first-time tent campers like myself, there’s a perfect spot waiting to be your home away from home. The campground offers a variety of accommodation options, from tent and RV sites to cozy cabins nestled amidst the trees. During my first trip to Fort Wilderness Campground two years ago I had a rental from RVShare. Now comparing the two I feel both tent and RV camping at Fort Wilderness have their unique advantages and drawbacks. The choice ultimately depends on your preferences for comfort, budget, and the kind of camping experience you seek.

Tent Camping at Fort Wilderness Campground

Pros:

  • Cost-Effective: Generally cheaper than RV camping, making it budget-friendly.
  • Nature Experience: Closer to nature with the sounds and sights of the wilderness.
  • Simplicity: Less setup required, which can lead to a more straightforward camping experience.
  • Social Atmosphere: Tents are often situated closer together, promoting interaction with fellow campers.

Cons:

  • Comfort: Less protection from weather elements and wildlife; sleeping on the ground can be less comfortable.
  • Limited Amenities: Fewer conveniences compared to RVs, such as electricity and climate control.
  • Privacy: Tents offer less privacy than RVs, especially in busier areas.

RV Camping at Fort Wilderness Campground

Pros:

  • Comfort and Convenience: RVs offer amenities like beds, bathrooms, and climate control, making for a more comfortable stay.
  • Privacy: More personal space compared to tent camping.
  • Amenities: Access to electricity, a bathroom, and sometimes even a TV.

Cons:

  • Cost: Generally more expensive due to site fees and RV rental costs.
  • Setup Time: More complex setup compared to tents, especially for first-time RV users.
  • Space Limitations: RV sites can be more spread out, which might lead to a less communal atmosphere.

Things to Do at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Campground

Activities for Every Adventurer

One of the highlights of Fort Wilderness is its plethora of activities catering to every age and interest. Nature enthusiasts can explore miles of scenic hiking and biking trails that wind through pine-scented woods and along the shores of Bay Lake. Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife sightings like deer, rabbits, and even the occasional armadillo that may cross your path!

From mornings filled with the aroma of freshly brewed coffee and Mickey-shaped waffles to evenings spent stargazing by the campfire, every moment was woven together to create a tapestry of unforgettable memories. Days at Fort Wilderness were filled with adventure and discovery. During my visit I explored the scenic trails that wound through the woods, encountering deer and other wildlife along the way. I joined fellow campers around the campfire or at the beach, swapping stories of Disney adventures and sharing tips on the best-hidden gems within the campground.

For water lovers, the marina offers rentals of canoes, kayaks, and pontoons, perfect for a leisurely paddle or a fishing expedition on the lake. If you love horses don’t miss the opportunity to take a serene horseback ride through the wooded trails, immersing yourself in the natural beauty of the surroundings.

Disney Magic at Every Turn

While Fort Wilderness provides a serene retreat into nature, it’s still part of the magical world of Disney. Guests can enjoy daily activities such as Chip ‘n’ Dale’s Campfire Sing-Along, where you can roast marshmallows, sing along to classic Disney tunes, and even meet your favorite characters in a relaxed outdoor setting.

In the evenings, treat yourself to the iconic Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue, a lively dinner show filled with hearty meals, toe-tapping music, and uproarious comedy. It’s a perfect blend of entertainment and dining that guarantees a memorable night for the whole family. For a casual evening grab a bite and some mocktails or cocktails at Crocket’s Tavern where guests can enjoy a variety of small plates and refreshing drinks. It’s a great spot for a quick bite or a drink after a day of activities.

At the Trail’s End Restaurant guests can indulge in comfort food favorites, including fried chicken, BBQ, and a variety of sides. The warm, welcoming atmosphere reflects the spirit of the wilderness, and the restaurant often highlights fresh, seasonal ingredients. These two dining options are within the same space and you mobile order or take your food and drinks between the bar and sitting areas.

Then finish the night up by watching the fireworks at the Magic Kingdom! Watching the fireworks from Disney’s Fort Wilderness Campground is truly a unique experience. Guests can find great viewing spots along the waterfront, particularly near the marina. As the evening sky lights up with vibrant colors, the sounds of the fireworks complement the atmosphere, creating a magical backdrop against the natural beauty of the campground. The ambiance is relaxed and family-friendly, often accompanied by the sounds of nature and the music piped in from the Magic Kingdom. It’s a perfect way to enjoy the fireworks in a more laid-back setting, away from the crowds.

Relaxation and Tranquility

Beyond the hustle and bustle of theme park adventures, Fort Wilderness Campground offers ample opportunities for relaxation and rejuvenation. Picture yourself lounging by the pool, unwinding on the beach, or simply enjoying a quiet afternoon reading a book beneath the shade of a towering oak tree. Fort Wilderness Campground left its mark on my heart and in my travel tales, proving that sometimes the most magical adventures are found in unexpected places.

20 Suggested Packing List Items for Camping at Disney’s Fort Wilderness

  1. Tent – The weather in Florida can be unpredictable and often will include a rain shower or two. Ensure your tent is weather-appropriate and has a rainfly. As a first time camper I used this easy popup tent by Villey. This tent is lightweight, easy to carry, waterproof and pretty much sets itself up. Depending on the thickness of your tent bottom you may also want to bring a tarp or ground cover.
  2. Sleeping Bag or Bedding– Choose bedding suitable for the season and temperature. Since I was camping during the summer I didn’t need thick bedding. I opted for a basic a deep pocket sheet set and blanket.
  3. Sleeping Pad or Air Mattress– I used an Intex Queen inflatable mattress with a built in pump. This is the largest size air mattress that would fit in my tent and was super comfortable. This mattress is perfect if you’re near electric or your vehicle to inflate.
  4. Outdoor Electric Cord and power strip– the camping sights have electric and if you’re planning on running power you’ll need to bring your own outdoor electric cord and power strip.
  5. Camping Chairs – For sitting and relaxing. Each site comes with a picnic table.
  6. Campfire Cooking Equipment – Portable griddle, utensils, pots, pans, charcoal, matches or anything you’d need if you plan to cook. Each site does has its own charcoal grill. There are restrictions on what you can bring as far as an open flame/fire pit so make sure to consult the rules before you pack. I dined in park or at the resort and did not cook on this trip.
  7. Cooler and Ice or Ice Packs – To keep food and drinks cold.
  8. Food and Snacks
  9. Cooking and Eating Utensils – Plates, cups, and cutlery.
  10. Camping Lantern or Flashlights – don’t forget the extra batteries.
  11. First Aid Kit – For any minor injuries or emergencies.
  12. Personal Hygiene Items – soap, shampoo, toothpaste ect. I also recommend packing hand sanitizer.
  13. Insect Repellent – To keep bugs at bay.
  14. Sunscreen – To protect from sunburn.
  15. Trash Bags and Ziplocks – For cleaning up after yourself and storing snacks or other items.
  16. Entertainment – Books, games, or cards for downtime.
  17. Camera or Smartphone – To capture memories.
  18. Towels– for pool and showering
