One of the standout features of Airlie is its stunning natural landscape, encompassing over 300 acres of rolling hills, lush woodlands, and vibrant gardens. The property is a haven for nature lovers, offering ample opportunities for hiking, bird-watching, and simply soaking in the tranquility of the surrounding countryside. Guests can take leisurely walks along winding trails or find a quiet spot to sit and enjoy the serene beauty that defines the Virginia countryside. Each season brings a new palette of colors, making every visit a unique experience.

Comfort meets elegance in Airlie’s accommodations, which range from charming rooms in the main house to private cottages scattered throughout the grounds. During my visit I attended the 10th Annual Fauquier County Wine Showcase, which was a highlight of my visit. The event brought together an impressive selection of local vineyards, allowing guests to explore various wines that exemplify the diverse terroir of Virginia. Each winery presented its own unique offerings, featuring everything from crisp whites to bold reds, along with options that celebrated innovative blends.

Tasting the wines was an experience in itself. Each winemaker explained the layers of flavors accompanied by tales of their vineyards or about their dedication to sustainable practices and artisanal crafting. Engaging with the winemakers provided deeper insights into their passionate approach to viticulture, making the wine showcase not only a tasting but an education in Virginia’s viticultural landscape. The event invited attendees to immerse themselves in the stories behind each bottle. The wine showcase was a wonderful way to deepen the appreciation for the art of winemaking and the area.

A Culinary Experience

Culinary enthusiasts will find their taste buds tantalized at Airlie’s on-site dining options. The farm-to-table philosophy ensures that guests enjoy fresh, seasonal ingredients sourced from local farms and gardens. The thoughtfully crafted menu not only showcases the best of Virginia’s produce but also reflects the rich culinary traditions of the region. Dining at Airlie is not just a meal; it’s an experience that delights the senses, making every dish a celebration of local flavors.

Complementing the wine showcase, I had the pleasure of attending a wine dinner that highlighted the culinary excellence of the region. As a foodie this was one of the standout features of my visit to Airlie and an exquisite culinary journey where each course was thoughtfully paired with selected wines. The chefs showcased their skills, crafting dishes that enhance the flavors of the wines, resulting in an unforgettable meals of thoughtfully prepared dishes, showcasing the bounty of Virginia’s farms. 

Each course was a symphony of flavors, demonstrating how the culinary arts in Virginia have evolved to reflect local ingredients and traditions. From fresh vegetables sourced directly from nearby farms to artisanal cheeses and meats, every element on the plate harmonized beautifully with the wines being featured. Guests enjoyed Caramelized Pear Salad paired with Barboursville Viognier 2024, followed by Braised Beef Cheeks with wild mushrooms, creamed potatoes, wilted kale and a red wine sauce paired with Barboursville Cabernet Franc 2023. For dessert, the Dark Chocolate Fondant with raspberry coulis was served with a glass of Taylor Fladgate 10-Year-Old Tawny Porto and the perfect finale! The atmosphere was warm and inviting, encouraging guests to savor not only the food and wine but the camaraderie that blossomed among fellow attendees. Conversations flowed easily, fueled by the shared joy of discovering local flavors and the stories behind them.

Exploring Warrenton, Virginia

Even without a specific event on the calendar, Airlie and the surrounding area offers plenty to explore. Just a short drive from Airlie lies the quaint town of Warrenton, Virginia a treasure trove of history and community spirit. Warrenton is known for its well-preserved architecture and inviting downtown area, where unique shops and local eateries beckon. As you stroll through the charming streets, you can soak in the rich history reflected in the town’s buildings and learn about local heritage that adds depth to any visit.

The close proximity of Warrenton enhances the Airlie experience, allowing guests to immerse themselves in both the estate’s tranquility and the town’s vibrant culture. After exploring local wineries, farms, and parks, returning to Airlie offers a luxurious refuge to unwind. exceptional dining options that highlight seasonal, local ingredients, Airlie stands as the perfect complement to a day spent discovering the historical and natural beauty of Warrenton. This delightful combination ensures that every visit is not just memorable but also a unique celebration of Virginia’s rich landscape and heritage.

A Testament to the Beauty of Slowing Down

Smithfield is a town rich in history and steeped in Christmas traditions that dates back over 200 years. During the special event, Christmas in Smithfield visitors are allowed to tour some of the beautifully restored historic homes adorned with seasonal decorations.

Visitors often find themselves captivated by the warmth and authenticity of this small town celebration. Many visitors come back year after year bring friends and family to this enchanting experience and collectively embraced the spirit of the season.

A standout moment for me was touring Windsor Castle and its expansive grounds, where I could easily imagine the festive gatherings of the past. Each room was meticulously decorated, offering a window into how the town’s founders celebrated the holidays. Additionally, I visited the 1750 Courthouse and Christ Episcopal Church, each site echoing the essence of the community’s history.

The courthouse showcases stunning architecture that reflects the town’s heritage, while the church provided a peaceful sanctuary that encapsulated the spirit of the season. The Tiffany windows inside the church are especially beautiful. Engaging with this rich Virginia history has made my Christmas celebrations even more meaningful, and I encourage anyone seeking a unique holiday experience to discover the charm of Smithfield for themselves.

Adding to the seasonal excitement is Elves Night Out, a special evening where downtown shops keep their doors open late just for this occasion.
