Is your social media account a good representation of who you really are or is it a curated attempt at showing something else to fit in?
Conformity seems to be the new normal and individuality uncool. Why is it that when someone doesn’t agree with popular opinion we expect a person to give up their opinions and change? We are slowly becoming a group of people afraid to have an original opinion, a group of people that are embracing uniformity and everyone having the same opinions, likes, thoughts and emotions.
I’ve lost followers and real life friends because I won’t post things on my social media accounts “just because”, everyone else is doing it. I don’t know who needs to hear this, but unless what you’re doing is causing physical or mental harm to someone else or yourself you don’t need to change. Why conform and blend in when you are made to stand out! We need more people in this world not afraid to stand out.
One thing in life is certain you will never please everyone in your life and it is impossible to do so. I wish I would have learned earlier on to do my best, make myself happy and to stop jumping through the hoops of other people’s expectations. Remember not everything you do needs to be perfect, being trendy is a choice not a requirement and in some instances conformity can be dangerous.
Going down a feed has turned into seeing unhealthy trends being popularized, people bending the rules to get 1000s of likes on short lived accounts, seeing the same copied content over/over and people making ridiculously long sycophant comments on photos I know can’t even be real. I am flawed and I’m not afraid to say it. I don’t edit out my wrinkles, frizzy hair, moles/freckles or my not so perfectly straight teeth. These things are me and if I take them away then you’re liking content from someone that isn’t me.
If posting on social media is causing you stress then take some time away from it. You should enjoy posting and I encourage you to be yourself too and stop trying to edit who you are to blend in to please others. Be you, be kind and embrace all the things that make you unique.
